I am starting to get a complex.

I've been rejected from 4 jobs recently that I thought the interview went well.  I have never had a problem getting a job before and every single job I have ever had I was hired the same day.   People keep telling me it is the economy but I think maybe it is me.

Does anyone have any suggestions on resources I could use to help me interview?  I've gone to a few recruiting agencies to get some help but they just had me take skills tests, chatted for 15 minutes, then said we'll call if we have something for you.  Not the kind of feedback I was looking for.

I am 10 years out of college and about 4 hours from my college so their career center probably isn't an option for me.

I have asked people who have rejected me for feedback but they just give me the standard "you were great but we found a candidate that was a better fit."

My friends are too nice and if we did a mock interview would say I did lovely (I tried this with my husband and he said that he would have hired me on the spot - sweet but not helpful).

Thanks for your advice.

  • What is your degree in?  Do you have a lot of experience?  I think these questions are important because some areas of expertise are much harder to find work in than others.

  • I have a business degree am completely qualified for every position I am applying for because I've been doing the job for the past 7 years.
  • I just got rejected from another one.  I am about to give up.

I empathize. I've been rejected by more companies than I can count. It's so depressing. I get the same feedback as you from the interviewers. It's very frustrating.
  • Although you graduated 10 yars ago, you could try to contact your alumni association to see if there are any career help options.

Is it possible that you are too eager/desperate for a job and send off that vibe?

What are you wearing to the interviews?

If you are landing this many interviews than obviously your resume is great.

Do you know anyone in an HR dept who could mock interview you and video record it and then critique your interview?

     Agree with PP.

You've been out of college for 10 years.  That being said, I imagine many positions you are applying for require more experience and pay a higher salary than those you applied for out of college.  The competition could be tougher.  I'm looking for work elsewhere and am finding that as well.  Good luck!

  • Honestly, there are more graduates looking for jobs than there are jobs available. And with so many people looking for jobs, employers can afford to be more specific about how well suited people are for their jobs. And if I own a bakery and two people come in with equal potential, but one specializes in pastries while the other specializes in, lets say Asian cuisine, well I'm going with the pastry chef.
