Dog Repellent? (Stray dogs on walks, aggressive)

Hi there!

I was just wondering if anyone carries any dog repellent while on walks?

We live very rural, and recently have ran into a couple of very large mastiff mixes. I've never seen them before, and don't know where they belong. I've only seen them once, in different locations. They growl and bark at us while walking, so we turn around and go home to avoid any issues. I have two large boxers, and I know that if any sort of altercation occurred - I'd be out of luck separating them, keeping them self, or keeping myself safe.

Does anyone use any sort of dog repellent? Like pepper spray for people? Something that won't hurt them, but may get them away from my dogs/me while walking?

Anyone have any other thoughts, tips, or ideas? I probably won't need to walk them for a couple days (they're at daycare today and tomorrow during the day), but I'd like to have something to give me some peace of mind for the weekend.

Thanks!

    Pepper spray

I have some attached to my dog's leashes when we go for walks. It has the same effects on dogs as humans, just aim for the eyes.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if pepper spray was safe for dogs or not. I'll pick some up soon then!

  • Just an FYI on the pepper spray.  It will work, just like it does for humans - but if there is any type of wind it could end up on your dogs or you.  Also, if there is a fight, I know stories of vets not admitting the dogs because the pepper spray is so irritating to anyone in the office.  I don't have experience with it, but this was a recent discussion on a dog forum I frequent.  The concensus was not to use it and instead carry a walking stick.

  • I would NOT use pepper spray.  Just as in people, it gets on everything easily, and it tends to make people and animals more pissed off and more aggressive.  Citronella spray is better with dogs.
