What do you drive?

Do you like it? Does it do well in the snow?

Re: What do you drive?

  • Jeep Liberty. I like it, and yes it does well in the snow (4wd)

But I'd like something with better gas mileage.  Don't know that I want to go back to a car though, but if I can find one that does ok in the bad weather I'd consider it. I know, it's more about the driver than the vehicle, but I like that extra assistance from the 4WD. But maybe AWD is pretty good?

  • You saw my Rendezvous. It is GREAT in the snow, but the gas mileage is just about the same as what I got with the Jeep Cherokee.  I miss my 4WD.

  • LOL, I doubt I can be much help.

I drive a Ford Focus.  MH drives a Pontiac Grand Am.  I personally have never had a 4WD or AWD vehicle and have lived in WI 24.75 years of my 25 (pushing 26) life. LOL  I grew up out in the country and drove a little car then (Plymouth Acclaim) too; now we live in GB.

I have been stuck ONCE.  My entire life.  That was like 3 years ago when GB got hit by a blizzard.  I got stuck in a drift in the driveway of my apartment complex.  ONLY because a car got stuck in a drift ahead of me.  If the other car hadn't been there, I could've gotten a little speed before trying to get through the drift.  When I got the Focus, I was worried I'd have more problems during the winter because its lighter than a lot of things.  I've intended every winter to put a couple bags of sand in the trunk, and every year I forget. LOL

FWIW, my Focus is better in the snow/ice than MH's Grand Am.  His has the "tread/traction control" thing.  I HATE it.  I'd much rather be in control of the car myself.

  • I had a Liberty, but got a Suzuki XL7 last year.  LOVE it!  It's great in the snow and seats 7, which I love.  Plus, our two big greyhounds fit in very well.  Gas mileage is about 24 on the highway, which is way better than I ever got in my Liberty.

  • A Yukon Denali.  Does very well in the snow.  It's a gas guzzler, but I love it.

  • We have a Honda Pilot and love it!  It handles well in the snow.  My husband is 6'6" and it is the first vehicle that he has owned that he can sit straight up and still have plenty of head room...yet it is still comfortable for me to drive.  I love it!  I drive a Jetta, it handles pretty well for a little car, but I drive like an old lady in it in the snow :)

  • I drive a F150.  Does well in the snow and it's only a 2 wheel.  If I don't have sand bags in the back I do tend to slide a bit taking off.  It's a truck so it's not great on gas.  My dh drives a lexus 400h but we just got it in may so I don't know how it will do in the snow.  Gas mileage is awesome!

  • I have a Honday CRV 07 model - I love it. It's got AWD and did *fantastic* in the snow last winter. I'm getting around 26-27 currently.
  • I drive a Nissan Altima. It actually doesn't do too bad in the snow because it's a bigger car. I'm anxious to try it in the snow now that I have new tires and brakes.

It gets decent gas mileage as well. I think 24 or 25 mpg.
  • 2002 Honda cr-v and I am more than ready for an upgrade!!!!
  • A Toyota 4Runner or a Mazda Speed6 (the 6 with a turbo and AWD). Both are excellent in the snow, though we did get separate wheels/tires for my Mazda because the high performance wheels that it came with are a little slippery.

Before my Mazda, I had a Saab 9-5. It was only front wheel, but it was AWESOME in the snow--I never had any problems with it. And, I drove it mostly in the mountains in Colorado where it snows much more than it does here.

If you're looking for someone with better mileage that isn't AWD, be sure to get front wheel. Any rear wheel drive car is going to slip and slide around in the snow and ice. And, remember that A/4WD only helps you go. It does not help you stop.

  • '02 Toyota Corolla and '04 Honda CR-V. I love the Corolla, but I'm not a fan at all of the CR-V. It does a little better in the snow, and the ABS is nice, but overall, it's just too big, has too many blind spots, and uses too much gas.

My Corolla has rear-wheel drive and disc brakes, and I've had very few problems in the snow. It's stick shift, which helps a ton, because I rarely brake. I have found that if I just drive slowly, I have no problems. I have seen way more trucks and SUVs spinning out in the snow because I think that, for a lot of people, the 4WD provides a false sense of security. I put sandbags in the back of it during the winter to help the wind on bridges.

My next car will either be another Corolla or a Matrix. I think if I had ABS, my Corolla might be the perfect car.

  • We have a Tahoe and a Saab 9-3. The Tahoe obviously works well in the snow. It has 4WD.  The Saab does okay in the snow, but I wouldn't recomend it for driving around in the snow. I like driving the truck and love driving my car but unfortunately my husband and I have switched vehicles since the Saab is a little cramped with 2 kids.
