How to train smaller dog not to jump
Hey everyone my husband and I just recently got a new puppy. She is a mini Australian Shepherd/ Pomeranian mix. She loves meet new people and dogs. However when meeting new dogs, especially larger dogs. She does not do it aggressively but she will jump on there heads and bat at them with her paws. Luckily we have only encountered nice big dogs so far but I want to teach her not to jump and play like that right away just in case. Other information besides her breed is that she a little over 3 months and we live in an apartment. Any information will be appreciated! Thanks!
Re: How to train smaller dog not to jump
I have a 4 month old German Sheperd mix that does the same thing. We have been trying to block her as she jumps and tell her "no". If we can't catch her in time, then we push her off and say "no". This is always followed by telling her to sit, and giving her a treat for doing so. It's just as important to positively reinforce a behavior as it is to let them know they aren't supposed to do something.
Another thing you can work on is having her practice sitting or waiting anytime you can, followed by a treat. Practice makes perfect! Good luck!
