cleaning your house - schedule?

Do you have a schedule for cleaning your house (ex - dust on Mon, bathrooms, Tues, etc)?  Or do you have one day set aside to clean everything?

How often do you clean:

floors?

bathrooms?

dust?

change sheets?

I have got to get better at this.

Re: cleaning your house - schedule?

  • I downloaded an app to my iphone that really helped took 15 minutes a day and the house stayed pretty kept up. I believe it's called Motivated Mom

  • So my house was getting FILTHY and I needed to do something other than wait for it to get gross, flip out, deep clean, rinse and repeat.  Here is what I came up with:

    Su:

    Change Towels
    Change Sheets
    Wipe Down Bathroom
    Laundry
    Vacuum
    Swiffer
    Wipe Down Kitchen

    M:

    Laundry
    Clean Bedrooms
    Put Clothes Away

    Tu:

    Vacuum
    Swiffer
    Clean Living Room
    Put Clothes Away

    W:

    Clean Bathroom

    Th:

    Laundry (as needed)
    Clean Kitchen
    Vacuum
    Shark Steam Floor

    F:

    Put Away Clothes
    Wipe Down Bathroom
    Wipe Down Kitchen

    Daily:

    Make Dinner
    Dinner Clean-up
    DS Bath
    Unpack Diaper Bag
    Repack Diaper Bag
    Pick Up Books/Toys

It has been working so far and now I notice that I don't even need to do as much work because it isn't super dirty.  Good luck!  Oh, and yes, DH does help out this way if we both know what needs to be done that day there is no question and it just gets checked off the list.

  • Most cleaning is done on either Friday nights or Saturday mornings. If we have a race on a Saturday morning, cleaning is the perfect excuse to stay home, get things done and go to bed early.  The mr has it down to a science and does most of it in about 90 minutes or less: dusting all furniture in the house (3br, LR, DR), swiffering/vacuuming floors, cleaning the kitchen. He also cannot stand clutter, so even with two dogs, the house is fairly tidy. If we had a kid, I think he might have panic attacks.

The bathroom gets regular wipe downs as needed, but gets a pristine clean after the dogs are bathed.

We usually change the sheets on Monday. I put them in the wash before yoga, and they are done around the time we are cleaning up dinner.

Clothing laundry is put away by the person who owns the clothes. Towels---well, that's another story, I usually end up doing that, even though the mister knows full well where the towels go.  I get lazy and forget to bring them up, as evidenced by the basket of clean towels sitting in the laundry area for more than a week.

  • Laundry is done on an as needed basis. It's just the two of us, so I usually do 3 loads a week (whites, lights, and darks). I have a 3-bag sorter, and I throw each bag in the wash once it's full. J does the sheets every other Sunday, and towels maybe once a month.

The bathroom is cleaned on an almost daily basis.  I keep clorax wipes behind the sink to wipe down everything from the toilet to the floors.  I keep shower cleaner spray in the shower, and I use that after I get showered each morning.

Everything gets a quick wipedown in the kitchen after we cook.

Saturdays, I spend maybe 2 hours max vacuuming, dusting, etc. the whole house.

Don't worry, I'm right there with you.  And I hate to tell you it will only get worse after baby is here. :-)

Lando, this is my fear!  I am hoping the nesting instinct kicks in before the kid is born so that I can get some serious cleaning done!

let me jump on your train too.

  • Don't feel bad, Tracy.  I thought that once I had Aisling and was down to working one job, I'd get all this stuff done and make gourmet dinners and all...WRONG.  I, too, need to figure out a cleaning schedule because my "system" right now is what Erin described- wait for things to get gross, then get overwhelmed and freak out, clean, then do it all over again.  Not to sound cliche, but I honestly don't know where the day goes sometimes, especially in summer when my hours double or even triple some weeks from the rest of the year, and I'm working all sorts of odd shifts plus trying to get Aisling to classes, both of us to appointments, etc.  Plus, having a husband who is a total clutter-lover doesn't help one iota.  It's so frustrating.  I really want to try to get some stuff under control this weekend- just in time to bring home 108377692 new things Aisling will get for her bday next weekend!

And here!  The only way it gets clean is by paying someone to do it once a month :/
