Hi ladies,
I pop on here now and again, but mostly still hang out on TheKnot as I'm still a few weeks from getting married.
After we're married, I plan to change my last name, and will need to apply for a new drivers license (duh, right?). The problem is that we're no longer residing in Florida - we're up near Boston temporarily while we wait for his orders to come through. However, I want to maintain my Florida residency for tax purposes - I know once we're married and he's AD, that it will be easier for me to legally maintain my residency, with or without a local drivers license, but I want to make sure I'm taking all the precautions necessary to maintain my residency, including keeping a Florida drivers license.
However, Florida (might just be Miami?) requires name change requests to be presented in person at a DMV. Considering I'm 1,500 miles away, that's rather difficult. Is there any way around this? Have any of you had this situation in the past, and any suggestions? I've tried calling the DMV, but just get an automated system and then on hold for an hour until it hangs up on me, so little good that has done.
Re: Renewing License/Name Change in Absentia
I'm not from FL, but I think the only way to take care of this is to make a trip to FL. I know in Wy I had to be present for my name change, that was 8 years ago, not sure if it has changed. I also have to go back everytime my license is going to expire. Hopefully, when I get it renewed next year I get what my Dh gets with the Spouses Relief act. But we will see, I have heard that states can make their own decisions when it comes to the Spouses relief act.
