What is a good down payment on a $250,000?
Re: Down Payment question?
Just a few posts down is a thread titled How much for a downpayment.
I'd highly recommend you put 20% down, so $50K.
This is just me, but if I couldn't afford to put 20% down, have at least a six months of an emergency fund, and extras for everything else I need, I don't believe I can afford to buy a house. My DH and I lived like collage students for years after we graduated. It was easy for us to save more then half of what we made every year.
I know it's none of my business how other people spend their money, but when I hear people say they put down less then 20% I cringe. There were a lot of reasons the housing market crashed, and one of them was because people bought more house than they could afford. If you can't afford to save, you can't afford to buy house. You might end up living hand to mouth for the rest of your life. I'm more interested in building my net worth, and having a comfortable retirement, then buying a house before I'm ready. People may say that I'm being "self righteous, ignorant, and it's just not possible to save that much" but I think that in itself is a very ignorant statement.
