Running with your Iphone

If you run with your Iphone, what kind of armband do you recommend? I'm a channel flipper (I listen to Pandora or Iheartradio) so I've been carrying mine. It works okay for short runs, but Ionger runs are a pain. I like having it in my hand for easy access and to check my pace on the Nike+ app. Is there such a thing as a hand held iphone holder (I'm thinking like the handheld sports bottle holders I see sometimes)

Re: Running with your Iphone

  • Certainly not the armband offered by the Apple store, I'll tell you that much.  I have one - I needed one quickly and couldn't wait for one to come through the mail.  The touch screen is useless due to the plastic covering and often it's too tight for the device so those side volume buttons get pushed.

Overall, I find running with a touch screen to be simply horrid.  It's just not user-friendly to be bouncing up and down and trying to "swipe to unlock," especially underneath a bulky plastic covering.  I wish my old iPod nano still worked.

In short, I'm no help as to pointing you towards one, but hopefully I can help you avoid a few bad ones!

  • I run with an Armpocket, and it works well for me since I can put my ID card, keys, and a GU in it along with my phone. I hardly ever mess with my phone while I'm running, though, I'll just turn on my running playlist and start my Runkeeper app, then go, so I don't really know much about pressing the buttons while it's in the Armpocket.

  • I've used a Tuneband mostly. It's more of a rubberized case that comes with an armband. Because its not a full neoprene sleeve that the phone slides into, it keeps the phone nice and dry and away from sweat. Phone doesn't flop around on my arm at all and the screen is highly accessible.

I use a Tuneband as well, got it on Amazon.  I will say my case is stretching a bit so I'm a little worried I might need a new one, but I've been using it for over a year and it was cheap.

  • Thanks for the replies everyone! It is as I feared- running with the iphone is a pain. I'll have to tone down my channel changing ways. I did find via google a handheld iphone case- I'll either try that or more likely a waist belt. I, too, wished my Nano still worked!
  • I hold mine too and have been resistant to get the armband because i channel flip too.
