car seat question!

When can a child sit front facing in a car seat?

Re: car seat question!

  • 1 year AND 20 lbs, but the longer they are rear facing, the safer they are.

That being said, I turned Sam around right at 1 year (she was 21 lbs).

Sara is still rear facing at almost 16 mos (she was just over 20 lbs).  She'll probably stay that way until she's too tall.

  • I am keeping Alex rear facing for as long as possible.  Is there a particular reason you want to turn to face front?
  • No reason at all, just bought him a new car seat- a convertible one and it doesn't say anything about rear facing, and so it got me wondering what the guidelines were for rear/ front facing.  Obviously his safety comes first, but I was still curious of the "rule of thumb".   Thanks for the help ladies!
  • The law is 20 lbs AND 1 year old.  Owen wasn't 20 lbs at 1, so even if I had wanted to switch him I couldn't have.  He is 18 months & still rear facing.  He has never known anything different & is perfectly happy.  Your seat should have a rear-facing limit on it somewhere, most are 30 or 35 lbs.  Owen will be rear-facing until he is too tall, since he will never reach the weight limit!

The AAP & governmnt have both considered extending rear-facing reccomendations & laws until 2.

  • Check up online on extended rear facing before you turn your babe.  The longer you can keep them that way, the safer they are (per my research, at least).

    GL to you!

  • I agree with the PP's.  The longer the better, now they recommend up to 2 years and 35lbs.  If you search for it, there is a crash test video that will solidify your decision!

  • Rear facing it is then!  Thanks so much!
  • Yeah, if he's happy, I would leave him. ?My son was miserable in the car, I finally turned him around at 15 months, and he was SO much happier. ?I figured he was over the legal weight/age, and I figured I was much more likely to GET us in an accident constantly trying to pacify him while he was screaming so it was safer for me to turn him around.
