Riveria Maya

Hey girls,

DH and I are going to Riveria Maya in a few weeks.  We are staying at the Iberostar Grand Parieso.  Do you any of you girls who have been to that area have recommendations for excursions or things to do?  TIA.

Re: Riveria Maya

  • I've never been there so no recs, but have fun!!! Please post a review when you get back, because we're considering a possible vacation at any all-inclusive for next year.

  • DH and I stayed in the Riviera Maya at the Grand Sirenis and the Catalonia Yucatan. We did quite a few excursions:

-Dolphinus: Swim and interact with dolphins, was a little pricey and I wouldnt do it again, but it was fun to say I've swam with dolphins at least once in my life

-Coba: A Mayan Temple and a bunch of other Mayan ruins. You can still climb Coba (apparently its one of the last years where your able to do so). It was a full day excursion, but worth every penny. I absolutely loved the experience and would do it again and highly recommend it.

-Chichen Itza: It was a 3 hr bus ride to get there and you are no longer able to go into Chichen Itza, but wow what an experience. A must see if your into history, just the history behind how they built Chichen Itza is amazing.

Xcaret: Your able to go swimming and snorkeling and check out all kinds of different exhibits (its got a little of everything) such as flowers, ruins, zoo animals, aquatic animals, even swim with dolphins and a few other activies (an extra charge for these though), there's shopping, an amazing buffet lunch and if you do go, definitly stay for the nightly show, its amazing!

-Tulum: We did the half day tour of Tulum, such beautiful history and one of the top 10 beaches in the world (you can swim while your there)

-We also went ATVing and speedboating at Maroma beach, hubs really enjoyed this

We also heard Xel-ha and the Jungle Mayan tours were pretty amazing, we havent done them yet but friends of ours have.

Not sure if your planning on booking your excursions through the hotel or not but a friend uses http://www.yucatreks.com/ for booking his excursions (its a company run by an american or canadian, cant remember which) and has said nothing about good things about them.

I recommend you take a pair of water shoes with you if your one who likes swimming and snorkeling, it can be rocky or lots of coral depending on what the beach is like (and they are much cheaper buying them here and not at the resort)

If you have any more questions let me know.

  • I have never been there but wanted to say it sure sounds fun!  Have a great time.

Is there ziplining available?  That is always fun to do in exotic locations!

  • We also booked a trip to do the underwater submarine at Atlantis in Cozumel. It included transportation to Playa del carmen and the ferry over to cozumel. It was worth it to us as we got some free time to explore and shop in Cozumel, as well as in playa del carmen. I wished we would have shopped a little more in playa vs cozumel. The vendors were sooo pushy in cozumel wanting you to buy buy buy. Even the restaurant owners were pushing for you to come in and eat. (we ate the the smallest hard rock cafe in the world). The ferry ride over to cozumel was great! The submarine ride was pretty awesome too, we took a boat out to meet the submarine (so we also had a mini boating tour off cozumel) and seeing mexico from underwater was amazing. The different fish, plants and corals were soo pretty.

Our hotel gave us a voucher for a free mayan pendent at Lapis Jewellery. We did go and get the pendent. However, you must take a tour of the jewellery factory which isnt very long and the sales people will want you to buy buy buy. It's worth it to get the pendent if you dont mind someone pushing you to buy something while you wait (its not too long of a wait). If your hotel doesnt offer one of these vouchers then I would suggest skipping Lapis Jewellery.

  • Thanks for the advice girls.  I think we are going to do a combo tour-a half day at Tulum and a half day at Xel-Ha Park.  Xel-Ha was recommended to us by two different people!!!
