I am very much a lurker, but I was hoping you could help me out. I am getting stuck somewhere trying to understand how many calories I should consume daily in order to lose 1-2 pounds/week.
BMR= 1550
Harris Benedict equation for sedentary lifestyle= 1860
My plan was to deduct 500-750 calories per day to meet the goal mentioned above which leaves me with 1360-1110 calories per day and then I would add back in the calories that I burn off from exercise, I typically exercise 3-4 times per week (I wear a HRM for accuracy).
The problem I am having is that 1110 calories seems really low, I also was under the impression that I should not eat fewer calories than my BMR.
Can you help me? Thank you!
Re: Help me understand calories
You're right; it's not a good idea to go under 1500 calories per day. Instead of counting calories, though, why don't you try eating less processed foods and upping your intake of fruits and veggies, whole grains, and healthy fats. Make sure you cut out any liquid calories (pop, juice, slushies, lattes, etc.) In addition to your 3-4 workouts per week, try to add in activity and extra steps (pedometers are helpful here!) to your daily routine. Walk or bike instead of driving when possible.
Counting calories has worked very well for me because I don't have a lot to lose. I am 5'5" and was at 139 (not overweight, but just wasn't fitting in my clothes the way I wanted to).
I joined Myfitnesspal.com which put me at 1200 calories a day to lose the weight at 1 pound a week. It's been fantastic and I've lost 8 pounds so far. I don't feel starving and I eat 5 times a day. I make much better choices now and think about if something is worth the calories. I do also work out 5-6 days a week.
I have a couple more pounds to go and then it's into maintenance mode. Good luck!!!
