Can Jordyn Wieber try for any other gymnastics medals?

They made it clear she cannot compete for all around medal, but does this mean she cant compete and win one of the other gymnastics medals like women's balance beam?  Or, since she didnt qualify for the all around does this mean she cant try for any medal besides the team medal?

Re: Can Jordyn Wieber try for any other gymnastics medals?

  • She can compete for individual medals on individual apparatus' (ie: beam), just not for the all-around

  • Jordyn qualified for the floor finals - that's it.  Her Olympics have become that event and the team finals.

I feel badly for her.  Apparently Olympics trials for swimming are just as cut throat with the "two per team" rule.  Not in the best spirit of the Games to eliminate based solely on nationality, but they are the rules for this Olympics.

  • Thanks! I like watching whatever NBC will air but was having trouble following how they decide who gets to really compete for a medal. I heard more clips today that she could still get her own gold in floor finals, but I don?t really understand how she got that opportunity and not others. Does she get to do that one because she was one of the top two floor scores for USA and was the 6th overall (so it goes off the same criteria as over-all)? And since she was the only area she met that criteria for is that why she can?t try for any of the other areas?
  • I believe so, yes.

The top 25 (or whatever) on each apparatus qualify for the finals.  Two girls from each team may go.  If three girls have scores that are in the top 25, then only the top scorers go and the third is eliminated.

Aly (1st) and Jordyn (6th) qualified.  Had there been a third USA girl in, say, the 8th spot, she would not have been allowed to compete.
