Hello everyone!
I am just curious if anyone has ever heard of people having their dogs race for fun? I have a 1 year old *** hound mixed with an afghan hound and a race horse, I don't mean like serious racing for bets but just for the dogs to get out and really run and burn their energy off. I have seen videos of wiener dog races... so just wondering if there is something like that for bigger dogs.
Thanks!

Re: Dog Racing for Fun?
Check out lure coursing. It's biggest among sighthound owners, but any dog that likes to run and chase things can do it.
We tried it one time, and my scaredy cat weim was too scared of the noise the pulley system made, but we saw some other dogs--everything from pibbles to toy-sized dogs to herding dogs--and many of them picked it up pretty quickly.

I was going to suggest lure coursing as well. Our issue is that we can't find any courses near us that don't have any breed restrictions. Around here, you have to have a sight hound (the list is about 5 dogs long I believe...).
Aside from lure coursing, I don't really know what other options you'll have. If your dog likes to swim, you could give dock diving a try. We're working on that with our dogs - they fetch, swim, and will jump off of docks. So far, so good. It gets them really tired and they have fun!
