Going shopping for stuff for the new house, any advice welcome!

So pretty much the only thing we have for the new house is a futon, which is going in the living room as a couch/bed for guests, and a possible dinner table from my aunt and uncle. I'm taking samples of paint from every room (except the bedroom... I don't know what that's going to be), and measurements for everything.

Here's what's on my list: A couch, 3 or 4 bookshelves (we have lots of books), chairs, side tables, and storage units.

As far as a bed goes, do you buy a frame first and then a mattress, or a mattress first and then a frame? And any other words of wisdom are welcome!

We've always bought the frame first and then mattress that same day, the frame/headboard at big furniture store but mattresses are usually expensive there so we buy mattress at smaller furniture store. You need the frame 1st to know what size mattress to get.
