Make it or break it time for my employee...

My employee S has boundary issues. During big life events she loves to get involved... too involved. She had a meltdown when I wasn't wearing my engagement ring (due to my work and a medical condition I don't always wear my ring) and whenever I don't wear it she acts like there's something wrong with my relationship. And she acts this way toward everyone, not just me.

Today another one of my employees, L, told me that she's pregnant. She's not going to go public until after they find out the gender, and at that point, the way S reacts to the news is going to determine whether or not she remains in my employ. I know L and her husband have had some fertility issues in the past, so I don't want S putting extra stress.

Fingers crossed... I hate firing (and hiring) people, so I hope after all our talks, S shapes up.

Re: Make it or break it time for my employee...

  • I think I remember you mentioning S, or someone said something similar.  Coworkers like S are a PIA for the whole team. It's a shame S causes drama, esp if her work is good.  My fingers are crossed for you that S is smart this time.

  • I would have created a policy about boundaries and getting too personal with other employees -- and I would have let S know if that she crossed those boundaries, she will risk losing her job.
  • So what did you do after the engagement ring fiasco with you and all of her other boundary issues? I think you posted about it over here ( got great advice) and on TK (great support).

ETA: If all you did was talk she may not have taken you seriously again. If you talked to her about termination if she crossed that personal boundary line I feel it's ok to fire her without much issue. Having it in paper form or email is better. That way there is no she said - he said that can happen.

  • has she been warned/counseled about this?
  • Oh yes, this is the same S as the e ring fiasco. She knows that she's on her last warning. I made that very clear.
