Re: (Untitled)
The H and I have a one-bedroom at the edge of zone 1 for $2000 USD a month- it IS possible! We are also grad students, and it was really difficult to find a flat. We ended up having a friend in London go in person to letting agents, since they were generally unwilling to communicate via e-mail/phone. Do you have anybody that could do that for you? If not, can you afford two weeks in London before your program starts to set aside solely for looking for a flat? In-person is your best bet.
Start with rightmove.co.uk, get a feel for what area you might like to live in, and figure out your budget. PM me if you need any help/suggestions!
Depending on how long you'll be there, or whether you're willing to move while there, this site might be useful:

Most of the prices I saw looked pretty reasonable, for London! And you might be able to negotiate a better rate on some, since you are staying so long.
