Building a new home.. Advice?
DH and I just purchased a 2 acre lot (yay!!!) and are planning on construction starting either late this fall or early next spring.
Any people out there that have had their home built that would like to offer up any and all kinds of advice?
Thanks!
Re: Building a new home.. Advice?
Congrats!
Drive thru your neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods. Write down what you like and dislike about the homes. From that-figure our your style (modern, 2 story, ranch, art deco, etc....). Once you figure out the look/style you want to achieve, stick with it! Don't worry about colors and stuff like that right now. Think about how big you want your kitchen to be, do you want an in-suite master bathroom?, lots of windows in the living room?, do you want a formal dining room?.......all these things are important to discuss now. After you have a floorplan design then you can get to the fun stuff! Picking out cabinets, countertops, flooring! Most importantly, be patient. Building a home is a lot of work. There will be set backs at times, workers will pis you off. In the end, you will have a home that is perfect and custom made for you! We did this and are so happy with the results! We have a home that is unique to us
best wishes!
We did a whole post on tips for advice for new home builders from lessons we learned during our build...

too long to re-type here. Good luck!
Awesome! Welcome to the building process!! We completed construction and moved in 2.5 weeks ago!
We worked with a builder who provided all the sub-contractors (aside from my step-dad who was the electrician) and we only needed to pick out finishes and the plan. We also made sure our builder kept us in line with our finishes - I didn't need to see flooring that was more than X$/sq, granite, etc. We stayed on target with our budget and made changes to the plan for little cost.
You can find our process by clicking 'Keith and Kinsey Home Build" and it takes you week to week on the progress/process!
Good luck! And yes, it will drive you crazy some days but it's all worth it!
