Last night I'm watching the Olympics, waiting for Missy Franklin's backstroke event. I'm doing as much as I can to not see who the winners are prior to the primetime NBC coverage.
After the men's swimming event, they announcer says they'll be showing the women's events soon. They go to commercial, and it's the Today show "tomorrow we'll have Missy Franklin, who just won her first gold!" I was so angry.
I understand the web will announce winners in advance, but why the heck is NBC doing it? The people watching probably want excitement, to see who wins. I just wrote them an angry email, not that they really care what I think, but it's ridiculous to spoil the events for those who want to see who wins.
Re: anyone else notice NBC's "spoiling" of Olympic events?
I actually tuned in for this event, but tuned in just in time so I didn't see any commercials beforehand.
However, I hated how the news caster was such an idiot. After a commercial he stated, "We're back, but that would appear obvious." I thought, what an idiot. His dry tone and lack of expression did nothing for me.
I also thought that the announcers were pretty harsh calling Missy Franklin's ascent "horrible," and talking about the men's gymnastics team with words like "terrible" and such. I mean, give these people a break! They are the best. It's a pretty anxiety-provoking thing. I know that people are messing up, but let's just empathize and say, "Oh, too bad" rather than announcing "That was horrible!"
I guess I have to stay off the internet because my home page is msn and I see everything on there before I get to watch it.
I feel vidicated, I wasn't the only one angry about the spoiler.

I think I just saw the same thing on tv. I guess I will watch and Not be surprised again.
So I think in this world of instant information, it is really hard to avoid all spoilers to events that happen in a timezone different than our own. NBC broadcasts the popular events at prime time so a large portion of the country can watch it. Cause lets be honest, many of us are trapped in an office or job of some kind during the actual times these events are happening. I think if you really want to avoid all spoilers you are best to stay off of the internet- especially the FB and Twitters. Anyone in your FB feed can like a post about some olympic update and it show up in your feed all "So and so likes whatshernames post : Yea, we won gold! Go us, we are the most awesomest of all awesomers"
Yes, NBC is dumb for putting a commercial with a spoiler on BEFORE they broadcast an event. I missed it, cause I mostly don't listen or look at commercials at all. But I did have the womans gymnastics gold spoiled before they broadcasted it. I was disappointed to miss out on the drama unfolding. But at the same time it allowed me to go to bed before they finished.
