Part time job?

I?m playing around with the idea of getting a part time job. We want to start some home improvement projects, get a new car in a few months, and ultimately move in three years. With that being said, we could really use some extra cash.

Since I already work a full time 9 to 5 job, I?m only looking to work maybe 4-5 hours on a Saturday or Sunday. The ideal would be an office-type job?filing or maybe answering the phone/scheduling appointments on a Saturday morning/afternoon. I would really like to stay away from retail/food services.

So, does anyone have any leads?  Big Smile

Re: Part time job?

  • rare is the office that is open on saturday and/or sunday. that's a pie in the sky dream! i can't even think of any office that is open on a sunday. you can find the occassional medical office that is open on a saturday (chiropractors, maybe some dentists, etc).

hopefully someone has more helpful ideas!

  • You could look at car dealers for a Saturday cashier or operator position. Although most of those also require evenings in addition to Saturday.

  • What about offering dog walking on weekends for people who may be out of town? It would let you have some flexibility and freedom on your schedule.

  • These might be creeping too close to retail, but --

What about a front desk person at a gym?  Or... I just drove past a smaller pharmacy today and noticed the sign said "Open 7 days."  Although... those keep getting robbed these days. ;)

This is basically retail, but there are people at desks in the back of Levin Furniture doing something telephone-ish and filing-ish.  Maybe whatever position that is?

Retail might actually be somewhat difficult to get into because many places want someone to work for more than just weekends.

  • Not the industry you were looking for, but I banquet serve at a local hotel on the weekends. I told them straight out I only want weekend work; right now, it tends to just be Saturday weddings (roughly 2-11pm). Depending on the number of events going on at once and the number of servers, I make anywhere from $100-220 per Saturday.

My hotel only has 5 full-time servers, and about 10 p/t I figure. Full-timers get first preference, obviously. Jan-March were pretty slow overall, April-June busier (think conventions, high school / sports banquets, etc.). I know December is supposed to be crazy (meaning I could work doubles on Saturdays and Sundays). So far, the extra money I've made was spending $ for our 2-week Ireland vacation, miscellaneous purchases, and carpeting for our house. It's been a nice break for me (I know, funny to say that, right?) and overall, not hard work. And it's been nice not to dip into savings.

    Good luck!

Honestly, it works out well b/c the management and HR staff (from what they have told me) are really focused on SAHMs or those looking for a little extra money. I mean, don't get me wrong, they have tried scheduling me for weeknights and I will help out when they absolutely need it, but my DH doesn't work a set 8-5 job, so I can't guarantee being available to work weeknights with the kids.

You just have to be open and firm with what availability you want - and some places will tell you that it's not possible, so maybe that's not the place for you then, you know? I have always worked a 2nd job waitressing and I knew what restaurants would want (at least one weeknight and Fridays-Sundays); I can't commit to that.

The other thing I have started to do is request off a weekend every few weeks, so I get a break and downtime. So far, I've not had a problem getting off when I needed (a handful of times). The hardest stress has been on DH as we're trying to finish up some renovations on our house (which he is doing) - he can't get too much done on Saturdays b/c of my youngest. But, we're making it work.

    Good luck!
