Has anyone ever used Yazmin Birth control?

Years ago i was prescribed yazmin birth control back when the pills were still in trial...they were new to the market. I used them for around a year but i was having loads of problems. Extreme depression and mood swings, headaches ...bad ones and my first ever migraines, loss of appetite and dramatic weight loss...50 lbs in about 7 months.

So i went back to the doc and got off them and i went on to Ortho Lo.

Fast forward a few years...i started to develop stomach pain under my ribs right in the middle ....it never traveled to my back but it always felt like someone was stabbing me in the rib cage right in the upper stomach in the v part of my chest. I went to the doc..they did a sonogram of my gallbladder and stomach and also this test for ulcers where i had to drink this gross stuff and then breath in to a bag..weird. Anyway..no gall stones. no visible issue. But i couldnt eat without feeling like i wanted to throw up for a long long time.

Fast forward to present...i am having problems again. for a while i learned to deal with them and being sick when eating because it came and went. but now I cant hold down food...and i have the same dulling pain under my ribs on the right side where my gallbladder is. I read somewhere and saw a commercial that people who used this BC pill had organ failure...and one of the major things was it destroyed your functioning gallbladder..... which...the doctors told me..they believed i had a low functioning gall bladder. I never had a HIPA test done but i was tested for everything else under the sun...even hepatitis. the doctors ruled out ulcers, gallstones, hepatitus, hiatal hernia, and several other things but never ordered the test that would determine what percentage my gallbladder is functioning.

so...has anyone used this BC before?  and have you had any issues....and is this worth pursuing. Until i saw the commercial i hadnt really thought about the correlation between the 2. but the sick feeling just came out of no where and was unexplained. i eat healthy, lots of fruits and vegetables and nearly no fast food (maybe i cheat once or twice a month)

This is literally a daily issue of feeling pukey...and i couldnt eat what i wanted for about 2 years because everything made me feel sick.

  • I never used that brand of birth control before but I know when I started using birth control I had a lot of issues. I always felt nauseous when and after I ate and didn't feel right for a while. I know that during my period I would always get migraines. I eventually saw my doctor and she prescribed a different birth control that had a lower level of hormone. I think it actually was the lowest made. Maybe you could talk to your doctor about finding a different birth control with a lower level of hormone. Definitely keep in touch with your doctor you shouldn't be feeling sick all the time. Good luck.

  • Oh my gosh.  That sounds terrible.  I can't relate, I haven't really ever been on birth control, but that sounds like a serious medical issue.  I would go to the doctor and demand they find out what's going on.  Clearly that kind of pain is not normal, so SOMETHING is up.  I would not be satisfied until I knew what was causing that kind of discomfort, don't let the doctors send you home saying "everything is fine," because obviously it's not.  Wow.  Good luck. :-/

  • YUP!  I was on YAZ for two years, and wouldn't you know it... my gull bladder completely stopped functioning.  I was hospitalized for four days for the doctors to realize what the problem was, and then I had my gull bladder removed.  Not knowing the YAZ was the issue, I continued to take the pill.  I was sick to my stomach for about six months after the surgery until I switched BC.  And, I only switched BC because I switched doctors and they wanted to try something new for me.  I was also only 19 at the time of this.  I contacted the lawyers (I also saw the commerical you are reffering to), and I cannot be included in the case.  They claim that I must have other complications, such as blood clots or ulcers, along with the gull bladder failure to qualify.  I wasn't too worried about the law suit; I'm just happy that I'm better :)

I would contact your doctor and see what they recommend.  They were able to determine it was my gull bladder by a sonogram, so hopefully your doctor will also suggest this.  It's better for you to get it fixed now, before the gull bladder completely fails.  I wasn't able to keep food/water down, and went into the hospital so dehydrated that it took three nurses just to get an IV started.

Best of luck to you, and keep us posted!

  • ^^^ wow ...so it definately could be related then. I hadnt put 1 and 1 together before i saw the commercial but the more i thought about it and then went back and remembered the issues and when they started, the more i got suspicious of what was going on. I currently still have my gallbladder but i am going to be going back for the other function test soon to determine if its worth keeping the gallbladder or removing it. if its nonfunctioning i would be much sicker but i can tell theres some sort of issue kicking up again.

I had been tested for ulcers because for a while that is what they thought i had. mainly because of the sickness feeling i was getting i was also getting bad acid reflux as well and it was just miserable.... it sucks that there was nothing that you could have done though without the multiple complications. i would think a BC that kills your gallbladder is enough to sue the living S-hit out of this company.

I knew at the time it was weird...the doc was pushing this "new" great BC so much...and i was so leary but i still took it. with all the false claims about how it improved acne etc. why not.

its a shame so many women have complications because of it.

  • I used Yaz briefly when it first came on the market.  I had horrible breast pain and my hair started falling out in chunks.  I stopped after 3 cycles and thankfully have had no other problems.

  • i used yasmin before yaz came out.  for two or three years in college, i think i had the typical bad reaction to hormonal birth control because i had similar reactions to other pills & the ring (except the ring was WAY worse).  i had symptoms like crazy mood swings, weight gain, depression, lethargy, etc.  nothing as crazy as blood clots and/or organ failure, though.

  • I used Yazmin when I was in high school and while I didn't really have problems with it, it also never seemed to do anything. It was almost like taking a sugar pill to me. I have heard of a lot of people taking it and having lots of problems. I would talk to a doc about switch to another BC. Have you tried the patch? I have used it before and had great results with it!
  • I've never taken Yaz but I did have my gallbladder taken out in college. I actually had to fight with the surgeon to have it removed because girls my age (19 at the time) didn't get gallstones. Only after I went to every specialist imaginable who all confirmed that it was my gallbladder did he take it out. And it turns out my gallbladder was the problem!

I would get a second opinion and tell your doctor your concern considering you've taken Yaz.

  • I've used Yasmin (or the generic equivalent) for 9-10 years without problems, other than decreased libido.  Your issues definitely sound miserable!  I would talk to your OB/GYN- I have a hard time believing you would have all these issues two years AFTER you stopped using it, but weirder things have happened I'm sure.  I'm in my last year of pharmacy school and can tell you that we didn't learn about that as a COMMON side effect, but you could just be in an unlucky minority :(  Hope they figure out what's wrong and you feel better soon!

  • I've taken Yaz for something like 5 years, I've never had a problem with it what so ever.

I Googled this and couldn't find a single reputable article about the risk of Yaz or Yasmin and gallbladder disease/removal. The only thing I could find was a research article from Canada stating an increased risk. However, increased estrogen can increase cholesterol levels, which can increase the possibility of gallstones. But that's a lot of "can" and is possible with any birth control pill that contains estrogen.

I'm not saying that I don't believe you. I'm saying that the evidence isn't there right now. I'd chalk it up to coincidence for the time being.
