taking dog swimming 1st time

So there is a dog pool that I bought a CBS deal for that expires tonight. So we have a 15 minute pool session. I know we aren't allowed in, there is a ramp for the dogs into the pool, and they wear a life jacket. Other then bringing a toy and throwing it in the water, how else can you get your dog to try the water (left alone I would just put him in the water since he has the jacket on and/or go in myself)

Re: taking dog swimming 1st time

  • A really appealing toy is usually your best bet. When I've been to swimming and dock diving events, I've generally been told to never ever force the dog in but let them go at their own pace by motivating them. It also sometimes helps if your dog can see other dogs going in the water first, but depending on the way the pool time is structured I don't know whether you'll get to see other dogs play or not.

Honestly, if your dog has no experience with swimming, I'd just go in with an open mind and a sense of humor regardless of what happens. Some dogs are naturals in the water and some need a lot of time to warm up to it...maybe more than 15 min. will allow... but you don't know until you try.

    GL and have fun!

    This is all great advice.

Just have fun, if your dog doesn't like it, just leave, don't try to force him in. Some dogs just don't dig swimming.

    GL!

  • totally took your advice and went with the flow

The life jacket had handles, so the guy guided him using those, feet were even a little lifted off the floor at times until he was floating, and we led him with long leash walking outside of the pool just saying "good boy". He did 2 laps, we took a break, then another 2 laps.

It was adorable, the whole time he had his eyes fixated on us and he seemed a little out of breath...clearly doing it out of force, but I hope he liked it.

  • My pup just turned 1 in May of this year and she's a Pug. Naturally this breed is very curious. But we took her to the cottage this summer and just let her run around and she eventually made her way to the water and went in on her own because it was something new. She didn't need a toy or anything to be coaxed in but I deffinately agree if your dog doesn't go in freely a toy should deffinately help.

  • I'm so glad it worked out. We go camping by a lake and river, and we have two dogs, one jumped off the boat the first time we brought him at 8 weeks, and ever since he has no desire to get out the water, and the other would be happy if we never took her near a lake again. Some are born with the swimming desire some are not.
