pls help AZ chick w/ winter boots

I am moving from AZ to NY in a month. Very excited & shopping for winter gear since I don't own anything warm. When it snows, what do you women wear for shoes? All these "winter boots" I see online are not exactly pretty. Do you just wear them until you say get to work and then put your cute heels on? I know this sounds silly but in AZ we wear flip flops year round. :)This winter boot stuff is new to me...TIA!!

Re: pls help AZ chick w/ winter boots

  • Will you be walking to work or driving?

I lived in Chicago and usually wore my heels to work (driving) and only wore boots (and changed to heels) when it was REALLY bad outside.  The year I walked/took the bus I wore boots to work and then changed to heels when I got there. I had UGG style boots with a different style sole, that's what I usually wore when I took the bus.

And I had several pair of dressy leather boots and I would wear those to work and keep them on during the day (both when I drove and when I took the bus).

You can wait till you get there to buy your boots though, what you find in AZ generally isn't going to be what you want for cold weather. And if you buy dressy boots, buy them with room for thin wool socks underneath.

I moved from from California to Chicago to Tucson, so I understand the temp shock you're going to have. A really good winter coat is going to be critical - do NOT buy that in AZ. It will not be warm enough. Silk long underwear is also nice to wear under work clothes since it's so thin but still warm.

  • Depends where in NY you are moving. We live in Western PA and last year was a very mild winter so I really didn't have to wear my snow boots that much. I usually would wear my Fryes or other knee-high boots. But when it snows or is icy, real boots are a must. Falling on your arse is not fun. I have a pair of Hunter wellys that I wear with fleece liners or my favorite are my fleece lined LL Bean Bean Boots so warm and dry.

I usually change into heels or flats when I get to work.
