Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Hey all!  I am trying to figure out what color to paint my kitchen cabinets.  Normally I would opt out of painting cabinets; however, the house we bought they are already painted green, and were probably last painted many, many years ago!

Let me describe the kitchen currently.  Green-painted cabinets with black hinges (cannot be changed they are custom built cabinets), nearly black carpeting, and the walls are a mix between paneling and wallpaper.  There is only one window above the sink, which does bring in natural light, but not a whole lot.  The only other light in the room is one above the sink, and one above the stove.  It's a small kitchen, narrow like a hallway.

We will remove the paneling and wallpaper and paint the walls one solid color.  The floor is being replaced with a light wood laminate flooring.  My problem is that I do not want to paint the cabinets white or tan!!!!!!!!!  I am open to suggestions for the wall color and cabinet color.  My original pick for the walls was an ivory/tan color called "cozy cottage" and my pick for the cabinets was a dark gray/blue color called "cordite" ... however I was informed by a few people that the color may be too dark.  I mean, yeah, it might even be close to black. ha ha.  But I like the idea of having a blue/gray color in the kitchen and make it a "country" kitchen look.. However all my counter items (banana holder, spice rack, toaster, etc) are black and stainless steel!!!

What do I do?  What colors should I paint the walls and kitchen to brighten my kitchen, but also stay away from painting the cabinets white or tan!

Re: Painting Kitchen Cabinets

  • What about light grey for the walls, then this blue? http://www.anniesloan.com/acatalog/Aubusson_profile.html

I think the black accents would tie in nicely! And there are tons of tutorials for painting cabinets in chalk paint. Do yours, then tell me what to do :) When I have 2 weeks to spare, I want to do mine!

  • I have seen cabinets painted grey with white or light tan walls and it looks really great.  Plus it would match your current kitchen gadgets!  Image search "grey painted cabinets" and you will see some really awesome ideas!

Have you thought of installing under cabinet lights?  That might add some much needed light without a lot of work or expense.

  • Just make sure you love the cabinet color.  I painted mine "west coast" by benjamin moore (saturated blue w/gray undertone) and recent repainted them "dove white."  My space looks much better w/the saturated color on the walls and the neutral paint on the cabinets (it pops w/the white trim and white fireplace in the adjacent room).
  • I think the blue or gray color for your cabinets would look nice and would not be too dark. It is difficult to think about what to paint the cabinets because of their black hinges. If I were you I would test a few interior paint colors on the wall to see what you like before finalizing what color to do.
