first time coloring hair...advice please

i have come to the point of needing to color my hair because of my white hair.  i was wondering if you would recommend doing my "virgin" hair at a saloon versus just doing it at home.  i would keep it the "same" color that i have, dark brown.  any pros and cons of either method would be greatly appreciated.  thanks!

Re: first time coloring hair...advice please

  • I've always done mine myself and I've actually had a ton of compliments at the salon and many of the stylists I've had have said they won't even try to sell me on coming in.

Since you are using a darker color, you will need Vaseline or something similar to rub along your hairline.  This will keep it from getting on your skin and leaving a stain - which I haven't had happen, but depending on the brand you use could easily happen.

Protect the floor and surface areas of the area you will be working in.  And usually you should choose a room with better ventilation.  I usually do it in my master bedroom and put an old towel underneath me.  I also usually strip down to just my bra on top while I'm doing it so that I don't have to pull a shirt over my head to wash it out.

Hair clips that you can wash out and a hair brush or comb that can be washed will help.  I usually comb through my hair to spread out the dye evenly.

As far as the process goes, it will recommend you do a skin test and a color test 48 hours before you color.  The skin test is to make sure you don't have an allergic reaction and the color test is to show you what the color will look like on your hair.

When you do start, you will part your hair and take 1" sections at a time to apply color, working from the front of your head to the back.  Depending on the length of your hair, you might need two boxes.

Pay attention to the time carefully.  It's usually easiest to set a timer.  If it says 25 minutes - which is the norm - then it means from the last bit you applied to your head.

When you rinse it out, it says to watch for the water to run clear.  I will often take a bit of hair and squeeze the water into my hands and look at that water, since it seems to be easier to tell that way. Make sure you use the coloring conditioner that comes with it.

To extend and protect your color, invest in a color shampoo/conditioner.  I'm blonde and use RedKen's blonde shampoo and color conditioner, and not only do they make the color last longer, but they also give it more of a natural look.

Hope that helps!  There are tons of articles out there about this if you need more tips.
