Need help navigating the hospital system
FIL is very ill. We don't know what's wrong but the docs think it's myasthenia gravis. They are waiting for tests to come in to confirm, but they are treating him for that right now. He had to do blood tests vs. MRI b/c he has metal behind his eye.
He's got a feeding tube and a breathing tube currently.
He's at UPMC East (the new one in Monroeville) and someone told my MIL that she should move him to Shadyside or Presbyterian. Can anyone speak to that or recommend a great neurologist? We don't know what to do or how to navigate the hospital system... like how would we even go about moving him if we wanted to? Should we ask to meet w/ the doc to express concerns? What is the protocol?

Re: Need help navigating the hospital system
I hope Kristin can weigh in, since she works with a lot of the surgeons at UPMC. I've been out of the UPMC loop a little too long to give a good rec on a neurologist, unfortunately.
I'll send her a note on FB to see if she has the chance to shoot you an answer. Good luck to your family and many prayers.
My three sons!

If his disagnosis is uncertain and he isn't already seeing a neurologist that goes to both Presby/Shadydise and UPMC East (which would be the primary advantage of transfer) then it would be appropriate to ask to be transferred to Presbyterian or Shadyside. I don't know which would be better, but the accepting neurologist would tell the referring doctor which hospital he wanted the patient to go to. You need to ask either the ICU doctor or his PCP to make the transfer. I would phrase it something like this. "It isn't that we are unhappy with the care he is receiving here, but rather I am concerned that his condition needs the specialty neurology care of the tertiary care facilty and is beyond the scope of a community hospital."
I am a UPMC emergency physician, but I work at St. Clair (contract arrangement, St. Clair is NOT a UPMC hospital), so I don't know many of the neurologists personally. I have seen several patients with myasthenia gravis that see Dr. David Lacomis and he has seemed nice, professional and smart when I've needed to talk to him on the phone.
I hope he recovers quickly.
