Anyone ever try to get off Nexium or PPI?
Hi -
I was diagnosed with IBS and GERD about seven years ago. Had severe nausea and chest pains, diarrhea, bloating etc. I have been on Nexium for the entire time. My nausea went away and I felt great after a few months of taking it. IBS is a separate issue, but I keep that in check with fiber mostly. I have been considering getting off of Nexium after reading several articles about the dangers of staying on it. However, I don't know how to go about it and what I can do to help the symptoms while weaning off , etc. I've read it can have a serious rebound of acid in the meantime. Has anyone done it or have any suggestions?
Re: Anyone ever try to get off Nexium or PPI?
I would talk to a holistic doctor or a conventional doctor that knows how to get people off of PPI. You're going to need to address the reason and or reasons why you're having GERD. And it's not because your stomach produces too much acid.
PPI's were created to treat peptic ulcers and when it was discovered that they were caused by H Pylori bacteria (also stress) and not too much stomach acid drug companies decided to maket them to a new condition.
It's most likely something you're eating that's causing it. For me too many flour products and sugar give me GERD. As long as I limit my consumption of these things I don't get GERD.
Other peoples GERD is caused by other foods. Check out this article in the New York Times:

It might be difficult to find a doctor that knows how to wean you off Nexium since they are mainly trained to prescribe drugs that's why I would go straight to a holistic doctor.
