Ankeny/Des Moines social scene

Hi guys!

My husband and I moved to Ankeny a month ago from Tulsa, OK (we're both mid 20's). We moved for his job and this is the first time we've ever lived out of OK. This might sound childish - but, how do I make friends in a new place? I've googled social clubs but not really any luck.  I joined the Y in Ankeny which I love, but I'm not a big class person, which is where you meet a lot of people usually.  I'm a teacher so when school starts in two weeks I'll meet new people there and we go to church (whenever we both can - he works weekends too so that's hard) but haven't met anyone there.

Any recommendations on where to meet people?  I'd like to volunteer in Ankeny/Des Moines, too and haven't been successful at finding places.  Any info would be appreciated!

  • No recommendations, but if you figure anything out, let me know! I've lived 45 minutes south of DSM for almost 3 years now and still don't really know anyone.  I hope you have better luck living in a more populated area Smile

  • Welcome to Iowa!  I hope you find that you love it here.  Church is a great way to meet people, as is the Y.  You'll be meeting people at work which I find is the quickest way to get to know new people.  Also, just walk around and introduce yourself to your neighbors.  If you guys are into organized sports, there are lots of volleyball, soccer and softball leagues you can get involved with.

If you are looking for place to volunteer, your church should have lots of information on local charities in Ankeny.  If you are an animal lover, I know the Animal Rescue League is located in Ankeny and is always looking for volunteers.  It's a animal shelter with cats and dogs that need lots of love and care.

Also, there is a pretty extensive Parks & Rec and Adult & Community education scene in Des Moines.  Taking a class on something you like to do there would be a great way to meet people.  Here's the link for Ankeny's Community Ed classes: http://ankeny.revtrak.net/tek9.asp?pg=regwerks, and Des Moines' classes:https://commed.dmps.k12.ia.us/wconnect/ace/currentclasses.htm

Also, if you have kids there is a FaceBook page designated for playdates in the Des Moines area.  I don't know who controls the permissions but hopefully they will be by soon and could get you involved with that group.  That would be an AWESOME way to meet people because they get together somewhere at least once a week.

    Good luck!
