Locking up formula?

Re: Locking up formula?

  • While I think that the policy of not handing out formula in the hospital unless it's needed or specifically asked for, treating it like a prescription or a drug is not the way to go about it.  That will only serve to make mothers feel guilty for a choice they make for whatever reason that isn't inherently bad.  Formula is not bad.  This is putting a huge negative connotation on it.  I like that the doctor cited some other reasons that cause a barrier to breastfeeding, because those are the true issues related to pregnancy/new-mothers that need to be addressed before making up someone's mind for them whether or not they use formula.

This is actually pretty concerning from a different angle, because New York is (or was?) also wanting to ban any soft drinks over 16 oz.  Which, again, isn't inherently bad, but it's making the choice for people instead of allowing them to choose for themselves.  I don't think this is a good precedent to be setting as a city.

  • I get so frustrated when politicians/government officials interject their comments/thoughts/opinions where they don't belong.  What makes them have the right to tell a woman what is best for her and her family?

  • His opinion matters because he breast fed his own kid! Oh...wait...that's not right....

Listen, I'm all for breastfeeding, and I think everyone should at least give it a college try if they are able. But to treat formula like a drug? You know, because mom's already feel super awesome after they had a baby, lets GUILT them into doing something they don't want to do.

I plan on doing that with my children. ;)

  • This is crazy. It feels like we are taking steps backwards in women's rights. It's happening with abortion laws and now formula feeding?? Since when does anyone besides the mother father and baby have a say so in how we chose to feed said baby?

Telling the hospitals that they would have to lock it up and then DOCUMENT all formula that leaves the cabinet? How much is given to the mother and who she is. This ridiculous. I'm fine with the posters, that is a way to promote breast feeding....which is fine. But making a family feel guilty because she either can't or won't breast feed!?

The only thing I can get on board with is asking the hospitals not to hand out promotional free samples unless the mom is actually formula feeding or unless the beast feeding mom asks for it. Who knows if once she gets home she will be able to continue BF? I could be wrong About this but don't most mothers go into delivery knowing what they plan on doing as far as feeding their baby?? If she walks in there knowing she is going to formula feed then that's it! The conversation is over. Give her the damn food and get over yourself!!

Slightly off topic: there was a Mayor in NYC who's daughter was pregnant and she was annoyed that labels on food and soda cans didn't state how much caffine was in it. He did or is trying to pass a law there that all of it is properly labeled. No idea of it was this guy but thats something I agreed with. Why don't we focus more on stuff like that, or longer maternity leave, or forcing employees to have better breast feeding/pumping areas for moms.?
