Dog peeing on our bed! Help!
We have an 8 month old Pom that we've have about 3 weeks now. The first 2 weeks he was fine- going to the bathroom in the morning, after work, right before bed. Recently, he has started peeing on our bed. He's done it 3 times and we are getting pretty frustrated (and sick of cleaning bedspreads). He doesn't pee anywhere else so I don't understand what's up with the bed?! My husband and I are first time dog owners and do not have too much experience with this. Anyone have any suggestions how we can get our little pup to quit going on the bed?
Re: Dog peeing on our bed! Help!
The FAQs (https://sites.google.com/site/petsboardfaqs/) have some great info on stuff like crate training, housebreaking, etc. Some more info would be helpful (when are the accidents occurring in terms of time of day? are you home when they happen? do you catch him in the act? how long has it been since he went outside when he has these accidnets?) Even without this info, the first things that come to my mind are:
1. Are you crate training him? If not, I would highly recommend it. Introduce him to the crate gradually and make it a safe, happy place (give him a super-special treat when he's crated; don't use it for punishment; don't force him in there, etc.).
2. Are you cleaning up any accidents with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle? If not, you need to do that; otherwise, he can smell that he peed there before and is more likely to do it again.
3. Housebreaking - It sounds like he's mostly housebroken, but it can't hurt to treat him like a puppy and take him out very often (like every hour or two) and praise/treat him like crazy for pottying outside.
4. Tethering - If he can't be fully trusted in the house yet (accidents, destruction, etc.), keep him on a leash any time you can't watch him like a hawk. When we adopted our second dog, he was either crated or leashed to one of us for the first 5 days. Then we gradually gave him more freedom (he was still crated when we were gone but didn't have to be tethered when we were home).
Thank you Caz! We are crate training him, and he is doing well with it. I will pick up that spray you mentioned, that sounds like it might help. The times he pees are sporatic.....but always when we are home and it has never been because he hadn't gone out in awhile. I don't get why it is just the beds! Twice on our bed and once on the gust bedroom bed.
This is also an excellent suggestion - a UTI or other medical issue could definitely cause accidents. If there is no medical reason for the accidents, it sounds like tethering is a good idea - if he's having accidents when you're home, it means he's getting the chance to sneak off and pee and/or you aren't seeing his signs that he needs to go out. Every dog is different, but circling, sniffing, going to the door, etc. might signal he needs to go out. GL!
My dog did that too when she was a puppy. We had her housebroken, but every once in a while there was something about the comforter! She did it at my parents house too. We never knew why she did it, but just like when she was training to go out, we yelled "no outside!" and took her out right away. We also always made sure to take her out right before bed. She did it several times, but eventually stopped.
As far as cleaning the comforter, I spot treated it with oxy clean and then washed it in hot water which seemed to do the trick.
