"Run away" cat

Our cat goes outside every night (I would rather he be an indoor cat, but he cries and cries until we let him outside).  We haven't seen him since Sat night (a week tomorrow).  Sat night he came to the back door, as he always does, except he did not come inside.  He took one look at me and ran back into the yard.  An hour later he did the same thing.  Typically, he comes to the back door and runs inside as soon as I open the door.  I thought it was very strange that he ran away from me twice.

I am wondering if he ran away or if perhaps something else happened to him.  We have looked for him everywhere.  His behavior was so strange Sat night.  Anyone have any thoughts?  Thank you so much.

Re: "Run away" cat

  • Maybe someone brought him in and made him permanently an indoor cat? Or called the animal control?

I hope you find him. When you do, I highly encourage you to keep him inside. I have heard horror stories of people backing over their cats outside, and what cats do to the local song bird population is just horrible. Cats have a much longer lifespan when kept indoors.

  • I totally agree with the prior poster. I'd MUCH rather let my cats cry themselves to exhaustion rather than give in to a dangerous desire to go out unsupervised.

To answer your question, there is a possibility that your cat is finding it's needs (food, etc.) met elsewhere so it doesn't feel the need to go inside your house and possibly be confined for an indeterminate amount of time. By chance, is he neutered? If not, it's possible that he wants to remain outside if there is an unspayed feral female or females currently in the area. Good luck!

  • I don't have any advice.  My current cat is the only cat I have ever had and he's an indoor cat (he had been a stray and I think he likes indoor life.  We try to bring him out on a leash and fights going outside) so I don't know.  But I just wanted to say that I hope he comes home.

  • I would definitely call around to animal control and make flyers with his name, your number, and a reward.

My cat also cries to go out, we just tell him no.  Too much scary stuff out there that is dangerous to him.  You need to have him micro chipped if you're going to continue to let him out.
