Name Changing Later

I just got married in July, but did not change my last name at the time due to legal issues.. Is it at all possible to change my last name long after the wedding?

Re: Name Changing Later

  • Yes, of course. Start with the social security administration and go from there.

You can change your name whenever you want regardless of when you married.

It took me at least a month to get everything in my married name and it was a huge PITA.

    This!

Name changing is not a fun process, but I love having DH's last name!

Yep! It's not as bad as it seems. Once you change it there, then it is legally changed. All you have to do afterwards is the DMV, your bank, and health insurance. Have fun! :)

  • Anyone can change their name at any time for any reason. I changed mine months after my wedding because we had already booked plane tickets for the holidays and I did not want to have to worry about any security issues.
  • I changed mine 14 months after my wedding.  PPs are right.  SS first, then DMV, then everywhere else.
  • It was 10 years before I changed my name with the SS office.  H likes to give me crap about it all the time.

I changed my name on my license as soon as we got our marriage license.  I guess I was lazy about the SS office. . .
