4 year old dog just started peeing on carpet

We adopted a 3 year old boxer mix a little over a year ago.  We were very happy to learn that she was completely potty trained!  She had maybe one or two accidents the first year we had her, and I blame myself because I left her home alone longer than I should've and I think she couldn't hold her bladder.

We just bought a new house 2 months ago.  Since moving into the new house, the dog has been peeing on the dining room carpet.  This happens a couple of times a week.  My guess is that the previous owners' dog peed on the carpet in there and my dog can smell it.  We have used a carpet cleaner machine to clean the carpets, but this did not help.  She is still going on the carpet.  This is especially frustrating because it is new behavior.

Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Are you using an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle?
  • No I haven't tried that. Thank you for the suggestion.

  • I would also take her to the vet, just to rule out a medical issue like a UTI.
  • Head to the pet store, and grab a enzyme cleaning kit that comes with a black light so you can spot the areas where there are pet stains.  I would also take her to the vet like other poster suggested to rule out a bladder infection to be on the safe side.
  • I agree with pps. Try the enzymatic cleaner and screen for a UTI just in case. If it's a big puddle on the rug, try sopping up as much as you can, then dousing the area with cleaner and covering the area with saran wrap, so it holds the cleaner in longer before evaporating and it has more time to work. You may have to do this a couple of times to really, truly get the smell out, since dogs' noses are more sensitive than ours.

As an FYI, I'll mention that female dogs can sometimes have hormonal incontinence, which can easily be fixed with medication (a synthetic estrogen like Proin and/or DES). But you'll want to rule out UTI or behavioral reasons before going that route.
