Question about Parvo and a new puppy

We had a puppy a few months ago with Parvo and had to give her up (loooong story and if you really want to know PM me).  We (my husband and I) really want to bring a dog into our home for the long haul.  My question is this:  i understand parvo is the beast that never dies...lives in the grass forever?  Can I bring a puppy into my home considering we had a parvo puppy just a few months ago?  We cleaned the inside and disinfected as best as possible BUT she did go on the lawn, if we kept the new puppy off the lawn until she had all of her shots would that suffice.  can anyone answer this for me?

Re: Question about Parvo and a new puppy

  • Spray your lawn with bleach water. It won't entirely kill the virus but it will help. I would also wait to get a puppy until after winter considering you live in an area that gets a frost. Did you clean your car as well?

  • Parvo is so dangerous.  I would call a vet to be sure.

  • Parvo can live atleast a year, so no puppies or unvacinated dogs in your house or yard for at least a year. No exceptions unless you want to risk your new dog's health.

(I am a vet tech and know how bad parvo can be and how easily it is spread)

  • I'm not a vet tech like PP, but I've heard the 'virus can live a year' thing too. I used to work in a vet's office, and currently volunteer at a shelter. Both places I've heard the same thing. I would call your vet and ask their opinion. It's a deadly virus, don't want it to take the chance if you're not sure!

  • I would bleach the yard and everything that the puppy came into contact with (at least as much as possible). Thoroughly clean anything that can't be bleached. I wouldn't any dog/puppy into the house that hadn't been fully vaccinated. Also make sure to allow enough time for the vaccines to take effect...in other words, don't vaccinate the dog on the way home and expect it to work. If you're set on a puppy, I would wait a year or get a puppy that is at least 6 months old so that the puppy vaccines will be in full effect and the pup's immune system will be better able to handle the virus should it come into contact with it.

it will live in the environment for over 10 years. I would scrub your house from top to bottom with bleach wash all linens with as hot of water as possible and bleach if you can. you can use a 10% bleach solution on a lot of surfaces with no color change (obviously check in inconspicuous places) and even then I would be very cautious with an unvaccinated animal on the property. it is next to impossible to get it completely cleared from the environment inside and out.

  • What about if you got an older puppy like say 6 months that had all the shots, I'd still clean and disinfect everything, bleach ive heard works, but my understanding is once the dog has shots you are fine, so I'd ask your vet about that. There are always older puppies needing adoption.
