Some great posts over on E08

A lot of McCain supporters coming out and expressing some optimism and just being good sports.

I loved this one:

I am embarrassed to admit that I don't think I could have been this classy if Obama lost.

Re: Some great posts over on E08

  • I tried going over there, but I'm getting overly frustrated by the sore losers AND the sore winners--unfortunately, they're the ones that are standing out for me.

In a related note, I had to turn off Rush in the car today--he was totally pissing me off with his negativety.  I just don't understand how sitting in a corner pouting is going to benefit me.  I'd rather keep an open mind and see what happens.

  • Don't be embarassed... it's not quite the same situation.  They have had the White House for  8 years.  Overwhelmingly, Americans believe the country is going in the wrong direction.  Polling has been overwhelmingly in favor of Obama for a while now (even if I refused to accept it out of fear).  Had Obama lost, something would have been very, very awry.  I don't think they are exactly comparable situations, simply if you reverse the outcome.

Thanks for sharing that post.  This is great:

But more than that, I am happy that I am sad. I hope this makes sense. For the first time in my life I've cared enough to read, investigate, study and struggle with my beliefs to pick a candidate. Knowing that I cared enough to be a part of the country that I call home struck me with emotions I didn't know I could really feel.

  • The positive sentiments coming out of some conservatives is not necessarily a testament to good-sportswomanship, but rather a testament to the power of Obama. JMO.
  • Ok...trying not to jump to the wrong conclusion here...but Soprano, are you saying that our disappointment isn't as valid because more people don't agree with us?
  • Ok.  Now I'm really losing it here.  Now those of us who are conservative and trying to have an open mind are that way because it's Obama?

Yeah.  I think I need a few days before I jump back in here.

Ok.? Now I'm really losing it here.? Now those of us who are conservative and trying to have an open mind are that way because it's Obama?

Yeah.? I think I need a few days before I jump back in here.

I agree with this?sentiment. ?The reason I'm not super upset has nothing to do with Obama. ?It has to do with the fact that this country has lasted under the same Constitution for more than 200 years, one election after the other. ?No matter what happens or who is elected, life goes on and the country continues to function. ?

I can think of about 1,000,000 people I would rather see in the White House, but crying about it will accomplish absolutely nothing.?

No, no, no.  I wasn't commenting on your disappointment at all.

ESF said she wasn't sure she could be as classy if Obama had lost.  I am saying that the situations cannot be easily flip-flopped.  I can't easily put myself in the situation of a Republican responding to this election because our situations and perspectives from the last eight years are so very different.  And that if Obama had lost, something nefarious would have been the cause... in which case we couldn't be expected to be gracious in the same way that many Republicans are being gracious now.

    That's all! Smile

  • Kate, I was really just responding to ESF's statement that she doesn't think she could be so congratulatory this morning if the shoe were on the foot. I think Obama inspires these feelings in some conservatives in a way that I don't think McCain could inspire in some Democrats. It's not a statement on your feelings per se or your good nature.
  • One of the things that I liked best about Obama's speech last night was the shout out he gave to the people that did not vote for him...saying that he's hearing their voices.  It was an incredibly inclusive message, so in that sense I get what LMW was saying, and I don't think she meant it negatively.

And as soprano suggested, I do think it would be harder for liberals to welcome McCain, simply because we've had 8 years without our voices represented and the prospect of another 4 made me want to throw things.

But, I do think Katie's right.  You win some, you lose some.  Honestly, days like this I am amazed at the power of our constitution and of American democracy.  The shifting of power whenever one side gets too out of control.  It will happen again in 4, 8, 12 years I'm sure.  I hope then, when my person loses, I'll be able to find solace in the amazing power of our democracy too and not be a bitter hag.  Big Smile

How's that for a unity speech?
