sick dog, eating

Hello, Ladies

Our 12 yo chocolate lab has been losing weight over the last year and has recently been refusing food. We changed from dry to wet food and for a few days he ate. But as of today, he will only eat biscuits.  He also has a cough and brought up a little blood. Additionally, he has become incontinent at times.

The vet recommended trying the wet food and believes he is suffering from sarcoma.  The vet said he could run more bloodwork, xrays and biopsies, but because of his age, treatment may not be worth the suffering.

Do you have any suggestions to make him more comfortable or suggestions to get him to take food? Water intake is fine.

Thank you!

Re: sick dog, eating

  • Frankly at this point I just recommend him eating.  If a lab is not eating something is seriously wrong.

Any soft human food. Rice boiled in chicken/beef broth. Yogurt, cooked sweet potatoes. Stay away from super greasy foods but just try and get him to eat.

    Is he on any meds?

  • I'm not a Vet, but it sounds like there must be something medically wrong with your pup.  I would ask the Vet to do whatever tests they needed to figure that out.  Like PP I would recommend soft and all natural human food.  When my dog was older and suffering she too wouldn't eat.  We ended up feeding her baby food and she would eat that.  I would recommend feeding your dog rice cereal and jarred baby food.  You can even just make your own by throwing veggies in a food processor.  I wish you the best.  I know how hard it is to see a pet suffer and feel powerless to help.

  • FWIW It does sound like he has some undiagnosed cancer given his age but there are other things that can cause these symptoms.  It is up to you whether or not to get an answer or just keep him comfortable.

As far as eating goes I do highly recommend talking to your vet about an appetite stimulant.  There are several options out there that can help and some can also reduce pain, but its apparent you are going to have to ask for it!
