Keeping dog off the bed and couch
Hi all, first time posting, I hear you guys are very friendly, hopefully I can get some suggestions from you.
We were told by our vet our 5 y.o. dachshund has an inflamed disc, and from now on no more jumping (ever) off of furniture or he could severly injure himself
So how do we keep him from jumping off? We could put steps for the bedside but it's impossible to do that in the living room (I mean I can't put those carpeted steps at each coach/chair in the house.) How do I teach him to stay off the couch? TIA!

Re: Keeping dog off the bed and couch
My dog also has a back problem (extra vertebrae). She is just a little chihuahua but loves taking big leaps off the couch and bed and jumping back on to jump off and get more air! She has injured herself at least 3 times to the point where she doesn't want to walk and I have to get her pain and inflammation meds.
Anyway, the vet told me during the day to keep her in a crate to prevent her from jumping off the couch when we are not home.
You could put steps to his favorite chair/couch. My dog loves her blanket so she can burrow in it, so wherever the blanket is, is where she will be. I would designate one area, keep a blanket there and or his favorite toy so he learns that's where he gets to stay. Maybe putting a treat in that spot or rewarding him when he takes that spot will keep him going to only that spot.
Good luck!
You may have to just teach the dog that the bed is the only acceptable place to go, or that wherever the stairs are that is ok.
My aunt used to lay foil across the sofa because the dogs hated the sound and feel when they landed on it. Eventually they learned to look for the foil first before jumping, so you'd have to make sure it is always there. I've also heard of putting those plastic floor things (like what you'd put under a desk for a rolling chair) with the nub side up to keep cats off counters. Maybe you could try that? Foil is easier and cheaper though.
I agree that you'd have to provide a cozy alternative nearby, maybe put an old tshirt in that space so the dog has your scent. Or one of your old blankets, as the comforter I grew up with is my dog's favorite bedding.
