Dog has fleas?

Rufus went to a vet he has never been to today.  Completely different practice, etc.  He went because he needed some shots before we board him on Friday.  DH just called me and said the vet told him Rufus has fleas!!!  Strange thing though, I keep up on Rufus' flea protection and when I got home, I checked him over to see what the doc was talking about.  I can't find a single one on this dog.

Granted, he needed a bath before we left so, I did it with flea shampoo and he will get is topical treatment tonight after he dries and yes, the house does need vacuumed but, either I'm missing something or there is a reason this is the vet everyone thought was closed.

Thoughts?  TIA!

Re: Dog has fleas?

  • Hmm...perhaps one jumped on him at the vets office from another animal and by coincidence the vet saw it?  Or the vet wanted to sell product or just plain can't see.  If you keep up on the dogs flea protection I doubt there is fleas, I wouldn't go back to that vet.

well the one thing I noticed in your op is the improper treatment of your dog. you should wait at least 48-72 hrs after a bath to apply the topical medications. and wait another 48-72 hrs after application to bathe them. a lot of flea products have resistance in areas around the country so it can be quite possible that you are vigilant about your flea meds but they aren't working. if you don't see any and don't want to change don't. but keep an eye out so you can catch a problem early if need be.

  • Vets often test for fleas by checking for flea dirt. They use a flea comb, comb through your pet, and shake the comb out on a paper towel. They put rubbing alcohol (i believe) on the flea dirt, and if it turns red it means your pet has fleas. If any of that is wrong a bit, my apologies, but it's what I remember from my vet visits.

I would give your dog a bath, treat 48 hours later with a different flea preventative than what he has been on, and make sure to vacuum everyday. Fleas make their way onto our dogs every few weeks, so we've started treating with topical preventative every 3 weeks too.

I wouldn't ditch your vet because he accused your dog of having fleas. He probably tested appropriately, and concluded that he did have fleas. If your husband says there was no testing done like the flea comb method, that is another story. In any event, a bath and frequent vacuuming of your house would give me some piece of mind.

  • BTW, you should wait 24-48 hours after a bath to apply flea preventative topically. The dog needs to be a little dirty for it to absorb properly. My vet gave us this advice a few months ago when we were having tick issues despite preventative. It's fixed us for sure - not another tick since I started waiting the 48 hours post bath.

  • Your husband didn't say what the vet was doing when he announced your dog had fleas?  I would try getting a flea comb yourself and see if you find any fleas or flea dirt.  Also, one of the previous posters is correct, you can't apply topical flea preventative immediately before or after giving a bath, so that might be part of your problem.  In addition....if you do find fleas, I strongly suggest you don't board your dog and try to find someone to watch him in your home.  I'd be pretty mad if I boarded my dog and he got fleas at the kennel because someone knowingly brought a flea infested dog to the facility.

    Good luck.
