Re: Home Improvement

  • Haha I understand your pain. H and I live in my grandmothers old house which was built in like the 40's by my grandfather and his brothers. The house was out dated and then my brother moved in and made improvements which updated some but then when H and I moved in we did more. Some of what we did was changing what my brother did and then some. We still have a list of improvements we want to do plus just fixing things as they break.

One of these days hopefully we can just relax!

  • I totally agree! H built the house we live in, started it in 2007 and it's still not done AND we just put an addition on it lol go figure... Garage isn't done, yard isn't landscaped, annnnnd we have to finish this addition. H is a carpenter... Everyone else's stuff gets done before ours! Haha oh well. Part of being grown up I guess!

  • Ahhh....the joys of home ownership! I don't think one is EVER done with a house...there is ALWAYS something to do! My parents have been in the same house for about 37 years and my dad is always working on something! We bought our new house back in December and have a very long list of things to do, mostly cosmetic stuff. Luckily, the previous owners had already put in new windows, a new roof, HVAC system (thank God for central AC!), so we don't have to worry about the big stuff. We just have to re do the flooring (entire first floor). Re-paint every room (we have two done- master bdrm and bath). Replace every light fixture. It's going to be a good time!
  • im going to be in the same boat shortly...well if we ever close on this house ...ugh.

THe basement has been gutted and i want to build an entertainment room and a bathroom and extra bedroom ...1st project though is to install wood floors upstairs. My H swears we can do it on our own but i would just rather hire someone and get it done in 1 day. with all the crap we will have to do just to prep, it will probably take us a bit. I am dreading the carpet rip up..Afraid of what i might find under the rug.

So im hoping by christmas to have the wood floors in and then the basement done or at least started by January.  We also lucked out that the previous owners did a lot of work to the house before we bought it.  i even got brand new appliances out of the deal. LOL

  • I feel your pain.  Our house is a victorian that we bought so a song b/c it needed total renovation.  We live in a few rooms and one by one have been redoing it.  We've been gutting back to studs and starting from scratch in each room.  We've been at it for 4 years now and are down to 3 rooms left to go.

We used our wedding money to put hardwood floors in the upstairs hall and guest room.  We wrote the names of our wedding guests one by one on each plank before we put them down.  Only we know they are there, but it seemed like a fun idea.

best idea ever!!! I might steal it for something in our basement!

  • We are still pouring every last penny into finishing our basement...it will be such a relief when it is done...and then maybe some of the upstairs can be tackled. H said the other day "I might get bored when the basement is done"....I told him not to worry I have plenty ideas for upstairs (we still have a room that we havnt painted which has butterflys stenciled on the walls and lime green walls...the I think will be my first post-basement project!)
  • I know what you mean!! We've been in our house for almost a year, when we moved in the house was a total disaster for about three months. We got a lot of the big stuff done (gutted the bathroom and re-did it, put in a fireplace, facelift to the kitchen) but there are a lot of little things left. I just can't find it in me to paint baseboards and window frames... And the landscaping in the back is a sad disaster.
