Kitchen Must Haves!

We are re-doing the kitchen in our new home.  It is being ripped out entirely and starting from scratch.  We have a dining room, so we don't want/need an eat in kitchen.

It's a good sized room. 16.5 x 10.1 ft. with some sort of "opening" on each wall (one long wall has 2 windows, two short walls have standard sized door ways, other long wall has a large opening into the formal dining room).

What are things in your kitchen that you can't live without?

Re: Kitchen Must Haves!

  • A deep kitchen sink.

    An island.

    Bottom cabinet drawer pull-outs.

Great task lighting above all work space in the form of recessed lights.

  • An island with a built in wine fridge! I love wine and definately could not live without it! lol

Definately the lighting, and lot of it. We have 3 recessed lights and 5 pendant lights.

Lots and lots of cabinet space and a pantry.

I also wanted one of those big stainless steel hoods over my cooktop. :) It really stands out and we get tons of compliments on it!

And our big splurge was the countertops. We wanted a dramatic look for our all white kitchen so we went with white carrera marble.

Ok one last thing, a nice backsplash :) Any kind done well just gives a kitchen a complete finished look.

Can you tell I'm obsessed with kitchens, it was my favorite part of our remodel :)

  • I can't wait for out kitchen remodel and I am going to really push for an undermount sink.  I hate the transition between the lip of the sink and the counter top.  Lighting is also very big these days and I think we will investigate under cabinet lighting.  I am also going to push for a smooth backsplash.  I know tile is popular but I think I would be aggrevated by cleaning the grout.
  • Well H is the chef in our house (I hate cooking), so I rarely spend time in the kitchen. He is pickier about how the kitchen is set up than I am. But I would probably say must-haves are:

a dishwasher (we've lived in places without them)
    a big/deep sink
LOTS of cabinet space (lacking in our apartment, so excited the new house has lots!)
space in general--to move around and have multiple people cooking
nice countertops--doesn't have to be granite, but not an ugly color (we considered a house that had bright blue everything in the kitchen!)
ideally an island, though that isn't a reality for us yet
    natural light in some form
a ceiling fan (gets so hot when H cooks)

  • It's the little stuff that I enjoy in my kitchen.

The kitchen faucet pulls out as a sprayer.

We have an appliance garage so the toaster, coffee maker, and food processor stays hidden.

We have two cabinets that have lazy susans.  So easy to just turn the thing so you can see everything and not have to reach.

    Dishwasher!  That one is obvious.

Lots of counter top space.  If you have an island, a plug in on the side is very handy.

We don't have a panty, but that would be nice.

    Under cabinet lighting.

  • Lots of light:  we have pendants over the island, canned lights all around, and my favorite--under cabinet lighting and a great light over the cooktop.  We expanded an existing window to let more natural light in and this has been our most favorite home improvement to date.  It makes a HUGE difference.

Pantry with pull-out shelving:  love to have everything at my fingertips.

Large spice drawer next to the cooktop--got an interior tilted spice organizer from Container Store, and it keeps everything how I need it.

Corner cabinet with lazy suzan inside.  I keep all of my dry goods in glass jars there, and it's so convenient when I'm cooking.  And it makes great use of often wasted space.

A bottom freezer refrigerator.  We bought an LG and it has a ton of space, and having the freezer on the bottom just makes sense.

  • i LOVE my double oven and countertop stove. regular oven/stoves look so outdated to me now.

also a given, but plenty of storage so lots of cabinets and large pantry.

    a bottom freezer fridge.

    gl!
