Attn: Pug Owners

I just have a quick question for anyone who owns a Pug.

I'm thinking of taking up running in the morning (since it's cooler at that time) and I was debating if bringing Bella (my pup) for the run. I'm wondering if it would be good for her or if it's a really bad idea since they get so warm quickly. It would be a super long run since I haven't ran in a long time but it would nice for her to get out in the morning before being cooped up for the day while we're at work.

What do you guys think? Yay or Nay?

Re: Attn: Pug Owners

  • I do not own a pug, but I do own three dogs, and I would take one of my my dogs (Jack Russell) on a run with me, but I had frequent walking breaks where I would let him get a drink of water. My total run/walk was about 1 mile. I wouldn't do anymore than that with your dog, especially with that breed. I would say if you are really looking to seriously run and get a good workout, then your dog will only get in the way, but if you are going out for a brief walk or run, then I think it's a good idea.

One suggestion might be to go on your run, then come back and get your dog for a cool down lap.

  • That's a very good idea. I haven't ran in forever so I wouldn't be going very fast for a few months.

I should correct myself, though, and say I would more likely to be jogging the first little while. I might give it a try one mornig when it's on the more cooler side and see how she likes it. She's still quite young (just over a year) and she has her own set ways. lol.

  • Yeah, I think if you both start out slow and figure out what works for both of you, then you're set. :) Just make sure to keep an eye on her and give her the breaks she needs, but other than that I don't see why it wouldn't be beneficial for both of you. Good luck, and good for you getting the motivation back! I need to start running again. :)

  • I'd agree with PP and keep running short at first, especially considering that your pup's a pug. I'd be very careful at first, and make sure he's tolerating it well. I have boxers, and a good 1-2 mile walk gets me a little uneasy at times (even in the mornings in the summer). I'd work up to longer distances slowly, with plenty of walk breaks.

Also the ladies around here often say that you shouldn't run with your dog until they're over a year and a half to two years old (fully grown). Pugs maybe mature earlier, but I'm no expert on the smaller breeds.

  • the problem with pugs is their short face makes it hard for them to breathe properly. Panting is the primary way a dog can cool themselves, so having the short face is a double wammy for those guys. its harder to breathe and harder to cool themselves. if you take her for runs be viginilant about her breathing if it looks like a struggle at all let her stop until she gets it back under control.

  • I have 2 pugs, and there is zero chance I would ever take them on a run/jog with me, partly because I run 5-7 miles and partly because they are extremely heat-sensitive and cannot cool themselves efficiently due to their flat faces.  I'm not sure where you are, but I'm in MA, and when I get up at 5:30 am, it's already in the 70s and humid (at least it has been this summer).  In cool weather, both of my pugs can go out on 2-3 hour walks with me (read: they are very fit and not overweight at all), but during this kind of heat and humidity, it's a 30 minute max for their own safety and comfort.

Obviously, you have to evaluate your own pug's energy level, heat tolerance, etc., but if you do decide to take her out, start slow (how long/fast do you currently walk her?), and stop immediately upon any sign of heat exhaustion (read up on the signs if you aren't familiar).  I would also carry water for her.

Getting married next March in Mexico is my motivation. lol A ring on the finger usually is a good kick in the pants to get back into shape. I just wish I had Bella's energy. haha. That dog is non stop.

  • Thank's for the advice Everyone!

That's why I asked, because although I know alot about Pugs (I did sooo much research before I got her because I wanted to know what I was getting into, and it's completely worth it), but I wanted to see what if anything was everyone elses experience. I don't want to push her that's for sure. Plus I will basically be jogging in the beginning and it won't be longer than half hour to start. Once I get back into it I will leave her at home. In the morning it's cool at times but sometimes humid. I live in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada) and the weather is all over the place throughout the year thanks to the global warming. So, I will judge in the morning when I feel what it's like outside before deciding to bring her for the jog.

Thank's again everyone! I look forward to getting to know you all. I'll be seeing you alot on this board since I'm obsessed with my pup and anything dog related!  Stick out tongue

  • Congrats on your engagement! That's definitely when my motivation kicked in. I lost 10 lbs for my wedding, but then afterwards got lazy and am now trying to get back into it again. :)

Thank-You very much! Well origionally I started out last year when I was preparing for my brother in law's wedding which was on a cruise ship (Allure of the Seas which is the greatest trip ever!!). I had to make sure I fit into the dress properly. So after when we got back I got SUPER lazy. I had orginally lost weight but it's all back now unfortunately.
