painting bathroom tiles & appliances

We're buying a home that features a classic 1950's style bathroom...all pink.  Yuck.  Pink tiles on the wall, pink sink, pink toilet, and yes, a pink bathtub!  Has anyone ever painted over any of these things?  How did you do it, what paint did you use, and how long does it last?

Re: painting bathroom tiles & appliances

  • Hi - My husband and I were in the same boat. Pink everything and me with a green face. I tried paint, but it just wasn't sticking (literally) and working the way I wanted. We ended up doing an overhaul of the tile. Demolished the wall, replaced backing with new (less expensive and mold resistant) backing and kept an eye out for deals on plain white tiles because they're generally cheaper and hey, white goes with everything! Other than that I once saw this website http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/asktoh/question/0,,20210751,00.html . Good luck!

  • I don't know if you care, but those bathrooms are actually important American cultural icons.  The pink is called Mamie pink because it was President Eisenhower's wife's favorite color.  There's an entire movement dedicated to saving them from demolition.
  • You can have a professional come in and reglaze it.  We have green tiled walls, pink tiled floors and had a bright pink vanity/tiled top/radiators.  We did a quick wet sand on the tiles, used 2 coats of primer and then 2 coats of regular paint.  It is already chopping from where DH throws his keys but we don't really care.  We plan on completely gutting the bathroom in a few years so we just wanted to cover up some of the pink.

Edited: we only painted the vanity tiles, not the wall tiles.  We also painted the vanity and radiators and it doesnt look so bad now.
