Hello
I am newer to Holland. I say newer cause I moved here a year ago (My Husband lived here a year before that). We are both very out going and love to have fun. I have been having a really hard time meeting people to call "friends". We are a married couple (as of 3 weeks ago) with no kids and looking for friends with and with out kids. My husband works anywhere from 40-90 hours a week depending on the projects he has going on at work. He has friends at work that he has known since college as well as a few new friends. The problem is that they are all either single guys who still want to party til 4am or older couples. We don't have any couple friends and I don't have any girlfriends either. It's hard to make friends as an adult. I am currently unemployed and looking for a teaching position in the area as well. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to meet new people in this city. Thanks!

Re: New to Holland
Hi there! I think this board is a great place to meet new people. I'm not super familiar with the Holland area (I live in the GR area), but hopefully someone else can chime in. :-)
If you're looking for something to do tomorrow night and you want to drive to GR, I'm going out with my SIL and BFF for drinks. Nothing super crazy (I have an almost 1 year old, and she'll probably be up by 7:00-7:30 Sunday morning
), just something to get out of the house. Time and location TBD.
Hi there! I'm also not a lot of help because I'm not in the Holland area, but this is a welcoming, fun board so welcome!
I too am searching for a teaching job, ugh. Good luck to you! Where did you guys move from?
Well....I've lived here 9 years and still don't have any friends in the area. My old landlord told me the only way to make friends here is to be raised here or to have children. Sadly, that seems to be the case. I have a few acquaintances here but no one I can just go out for coffee with. I don't work in town, either, so that really doesn't help.
I tried joining clubs & church & all of that when I moved here, with no luck. Long time residents have their cliques already and it is near impossible to break through. You may have more luck because you're outgoing & social. For someone who is a wallflower & feels very awkward mingling with strangers, it just hasn't gone well though. Everyone I had hobbies in common with were my parents age or older. Which is fine when you need seasoned advice, but not necessarily for your entire social circle.
Here, church seems to be the best option, but that doesn't work for everyone.
But, I'm here, so if you want to meet at Lemonjellos or something sometime, at least we could both say we tried to meet someone new!
Hi Thanks for the welcome "TeacherToBe6"! Good luck to you as well in finding a teaching job. We moved from the UP. (i'm originally from the east side of MI but my husband grew up in the UP. We met up there while I was teaching there for 2 years.)
Hi "Zebe912"! It does seem to me that Holland is a cliquey town. We could definitely meet up at Lemonjello's sometime. I'm busy this weekend but let me know when is a good time for you.
My name is Jill by the way. What is yours?
After much looking, I figured out how to private message you. I gave more info there, so hopefully you can find it!
