We're just moving into our new house and I had a few design questions. I figured I'd throw them all in one post.
1. Hallway decorations: Having always lived in apartments, I've never had big hallways to decorate, but I don't want them feeling bare.
The first situation is our entry hallway. One wall is going to be thick, gray and white horizontal stripes and the wall opposite it is just the solid gray color. Should I do some pictures on just one of the walls or both? Any design configurations? Also, I was hoping to put in a narrow black table where we can put keys and things and maybe some flowers on the wall with stripes. Would that wall look too busy then with pics too?
We also have a huge hallway upstairs that will just be solid gray. Any picture ideas? I was thinking of getting some travel photos we've taken on trips printed, some in color, some in B&W. Would you suggest all the same size and spaced out, or pics of different sizes in some sort of configuration?
2. My office
I really like black furniture, so most of the furniture in our house will be black or really dark wood. I also like brighter, non-neutral colors on the walls. We just painted my office Martha Stewart's Awning:
You can see the color HERE . It's a muted teal color.
My desk is black. The curtains are black and white. But I didn't want just a two-tone room. Suggestions for other colors I could bring in without going overboard? I was thinking possibly some grays, muted pinks, and yellows? I'm open to suggestions though.
Re: A few decorating questions
I think for your entryway, I would stick with no pictures on the wall that you are putting the table. Maybe you could get a nice statement mirror for above the table, but I wouldn't do pictures.
For the hallway upstairs, take a look at this link (I can't get the link button to work):

For your office, I love that teal color! It's one of my wedding colors
What if you did a purple, like the color of a phalaenopsis orchid? If you google image search teal and purple, tons of examples of the two colors come up.
1) I would also reccomend a nice mirror or single wall decor piece. But the stripes and table with a nice vase sound lovely.
2) I would incorporate silver and grey colors. I think another bright color would be overkill. silver/black/white always looks good together, especially with a bright hue (your teal) mixed in.
Hallways can get very dark. Adding a mirror and silver frames is a good idea to reflect any light added.
For the office, I would add white or cream to the teal and black color scheme with a jewel tone as the accent (burgundy, topaz, or deep lapis maybe).
As far as the hallway goes, many people often go with mirrors in a hallway to make the space look larger, while others use picture frames without pictures in them. Here's one example of the framed look: http://www.lot26.com/p/Ornate-Picture-Frames-Wall-Stickers and mirrors are easily searchable anywhere on the internet. Both looks are classy and easy to set up.
As for the office, I think your current ideas are headed in the right direction. As long as you don't have any huge statement colors, you should be okay.
