This is a reply to a status that I also commented on (actually, it's a reply to another reply by a guy I knew in HS who's gay - I had a crush on him, but I digress...)
this is a burning issue for people on both sides. I've never heard of
gays/lesbians having to ride in the back of the bus, use a different
drinking fountain, use a different bathroom, or been denied employment
because of orientation. That would be extremely unfair & wrong (to
use NO language). What specific rights have been taken away? I'm ... Read Morenot
being flippant, I really would like to know. I don't think it is fair
to MLK, Medgar Evers, and everyone else who fought for civil rights in
the 50's and 60's to compare how marriage is defined in California to
the civil rights movement. If you are trying to make a similar
comparison, it is reaching.
To change how marriage is defined by
97% by the other 3% seems little unfair to me. I know that the YES and
NO campaigns will never see eye to eye, but I do believe that we should
do what we can to provide the same rights to same sex couples as far as
binational relationships, hospital visits, health insurance,
benificiaries, etc.
I don't know the person who wrote this, and I'm not sure they know that the person they're responding to is gay (though it's pretty obvious from his comment, it's also pretty obvious this person wouldn't give a rat's ass).
I don't even know where to start. How dare you tell another person their civil rights struggle isn't worthy? Link to an article with suicide statistics? Remind them that not all "97%" of us straight people define marriage as between a man and a woman? Scream, go insane, and get violent?
