My cat will ONLY drink out of our bathtub/toilets

My cat 2-3 yrs old will only drink from our bathtub/toilet. The toilet thing is gross and we use harsh cleaning chemicals on it so I dont want him to get sick, so I dont want him to do it anymore. And the bathtub thing wouldnt be a problem if he didnt suck in so much air everytime along with the water that he pukes. EVERYTIME we let him drink from the tub he pukes.

I've hardly ever seen him drink from the bowl, and I dont want him to get himself sick or dehydrated. What can we do?

  • We had a cat that would only drink from the faucet at a fast drip.

Try that. Your cat wants very fresh water it seems.

  • Do you feed your cat wet food? We add a good amount of filtered water to the wet food to make sure he gets enough water. Between being on a wet food only diet and the additional filtered water he gets more than enough even if he doesn't drink from his bowl.

  • Our kitty LOVES to drink from any sinks faucet. So much do she would lick the screen when it wasn't even on. We ended up buying Kilker Wale foucet attachments at our local super market (sure you can find them elsewhere) that when the moth is closed it turns the faucet to a water fountain. Now she will Paitently wait to drink from the fountain.

Also try a ceramic or stainless steel fountain cat/dog bowl. If you aren't sure kitty will like it get a cheaper one to try out first.

To solve the toilet issue just keep the lid down when not in use. Kitty won't be able to get in unless they can lift the lid. Can't help you on the bathtub. Ours did that too until we got the fountains.

  • My cat started doing this as well.  We found that she would also drink from an elevated bowl. We set her water bowl on our side table by the couch and she would drink from that.  Worth a try.

  • Occasionally my dog will drink from the toilet.  I saw on TV once that it is because of the temperature of the toilet water. It said. they like their water cold like many of us.  Sounds crazy but maybe add a little ice to the water dish and it might help

  • You can get pet fountains so that they have a constant source of fresh running water. Most even come with carbon filters.  Our cat loves his one from "whisker city". I'd get a slightly larger one (one designed for 2 or more cats) so they don't spill water all over the floor when they drink.
  • I would try a pet fountain. I have a cat who loves to drink from toilets also and he enjoys the pet fountain.

  • Another vote for the pet fountain. Ours has made a huge difference in getting our cat to drink water.

  • Cats can taste water very well so they prefer the freshest and cleanest water available. Since you're toilet is flushed which refreshes the water it tastes better to the cat. I'd suggest changing the water in the cat bowl frequently, using a porcelain or glass water bowl and shut the toilet lid. I can't stand behind the cat fountain idea because I've tried it and it didn't work for my cats. I've been able to get them to drink more water just by keeping it fresh and using a porcelain or glass bowl.
