Where to put mail organizing area?

I don't think I've posted on this board yet, so thank you in advance! I would like to create a mail organizing area in my home, but I don't know where to put it.  Our office is on the 3rd floor, so I need something on the 1st floor to manage mail.  I had it in the kitchen, but the kitchen is quite small, and I would like to keep the counter space open for food prep etc.

My other options are the front entrance, sun room, living room, and dining room.  My DH doesn't really want anything in the front entrance, and I am afraid it will look cluttered as people first enter the house.  There is no room by the back door. I would like to put in a very small shredder, recycle bin, and place for loose mail and a expandable file folder.  Any advice?  Any suggestions on a type of table or furniture to purchase for the mail center?  I would like it to be very small and blend in.  There really is no room for a desk.

Re: Where to put mail organizing area?

  • DH vetoed a shredder, and I have a bag I can use and fold up for recycle.  So I guess I am going to move our current mail to the dining room buffet and use one cubby for the file folder and get a basket for loose papers, and put it in the other cubby.  It's not ideal, but I hate looking at clutter.  Our papers used to take over the whole counter.  I've also taken some of the other office stuff and put it in our kitchen drawer, so first drawer is junk drawer (batteries, sunglasses cases, glue, random cords etc.) and second drawer is white paper, envelopes, stapler, and daycare sheets etc.
  • I was going to suggest a wall rack, I saw one online at LTD commodities for $6.95
  • Good idea.  I'll look into it. Thank you
