Hey Guys- not new to the nest but im a new puppy mom!! Ive grown up with dogs and we have a cat, but this is our first puppy together Im loving it.
I have a question on what to leave in his crate, if anything. We are crate training him and he is doing pretty well with it. But he rips up any blanket in there, first it was a comforter so i got rid of that b/c of the stuffing, then I put this old fuzzy type thing i had in there, he ripped it to shreds. I recently took it out b/c i dont want him swallowing the pieces.
Is there anything else i could try in there or is he doomed to have nothing. I feel bad b/c it cant be comfortable. I'm half tempted to move the doggie bed we have in the living room for him in the crate but i still think he'll try and rip it up. We do leave tons of toys for him to play with in the crate but he seems to LOVE blankets, lol
FWIW- Our puppy, Ben is a cane corso and 25lbs at 13 weeks
Re: Blanket in crate
We were lucky because Chef D never ripped up beds, blankets or anything like that. He likes to be comfortable too much so he was able to have a bed from day one.
Had he ripped up that stuff I would just make him go without until he earned the privilege of having them. I wouldn't feel too bad, he's the one who is ruining for himself.
For a puppy, regardless of whether they rip things, I don't recommend any bedding in the crate. If a puppy pees in the crate, the bedding will soak it up and they won't learn as quickly not to go potty in the crate.
I wouldn't feel too bad of putting nothing in the crate for the time being because it really will help in the long run. Once he is fully trained to only potty outside and if in the future you find that he doesn't chew things, then you can always introduce something in the crate.
Unattended in a crate = no blanket. Once he is no longer chewing up bedding and is fully potty trained, I'd ease into it with maybe a towel.
You don't want to end up dealing with a blockage. Our Lily had no bedding for almost a year because she was a bedding eater.
My pup didn't stay in the crate for too long. I picked the roudy one of the bunch. haha. BUT, when she was in the crate, I put her pee pad, a blanket and a toy with no stuffing. If it's a young pup you should get a small little teething toy that will 1) Amuse it during the day and 2) Helping the the teething process.
Putting anything that has stuffing is just a bad idea all around just in case he/she eats it.
Congratulations, btw, on the new fur baby!! < 3
Post pics if you can! I'm a sucker for dog pictures....sad but true. haha.
he is alittle bigger now, this pic is about a month old. But here he is, his name is Ben. Thanks for all your suggestions
Oh my freaking goodness!!
He's too cute for words! Excuse me for my patetic ways of expression...by I could just nom his face!! hehe
hahahahahahhaha i know exactly what you mean
LOL...glad you do, cause if you didn't you'd proabably think I was a danger to your pup! HA
Btw...seeing the pic again, I can't help notice how big his paws are. hehe. Our cottage neighbours got a dog last year (forgot the breed but it's a pretty big dog) and his paws were HUGE. When I see the dog now, I still can't believe he's only a year old.
his paws are super big. he is still tripping over them. Full grown he will be about 120-130lbs
we have hardwood floors in our house so for our pup (currently 5 months) instead of putting a bed or blanket inside, I put a rug underneath his wire crate, this cut down on the sound that was made when he would move around and it seems to have softened the surface for him without giving him a "diaper" in his crate. Also, the only toys he has in there are Kong brand (only thing that seems to be indestructible), so that he has something to occupy his mind while in there during the day.
