Sarah

I just saw your comment on the Health Care topic. No, none of my maternity leave will be paid. But my friend said I should at least get 6 weeks paid per FMLA? I'll have to look into this. My company gives me 3 months leave, I was planning on taking all 3 months, didn't realize I wouldn't be getting paid though.

If I have homes sold that would be closing in that time frame I "should" still get paid for those. It's a complicated system where I work.

I was able to call the benefits line and finish enrolling. I signed up for STD because they said they "might" still accept my pregnancy. Can't hurt to try I gues.s

Re: Sarah

  • I don't know for sure because our maternity leave is totally different here, but my understanding was FMLA only provided job security during your maternity leave, not pay.  Your individual company may choose to offer you some pay though.

I'd start looking into that soon.  Already half way there!

Lindsay's right.  FMLA protects your job so that they can't fire you due to a medical/ family leave.  It is fairly rare for a company to provide paid leave unless you get it through a STD policy.  Unfortunately, your employer is under no obligation whatsoever to provide you with any pay at all for the time you are absent.

  • Like the other ladies said, FMLA only requires your employer to keep your job, it does not require them to pay you.  Each employer has their own policies regarding paid and unpaid leave so just make sure you know what your company's policies are.

I'm shocked that your STD "might" still accept your pregnancy.  My short term disability is trying to deny me and I hadn't even gone to the doctor yet to confirm pregnancy when I signed up for it.  I won't know if they are going to pay until after I deliver.  I have no idea how they would even consider it a pre-existing condition when I was never treated by a medical professional for it prior to signing up, but we shall see.  Luckily, we saved for me being out of work and weren't going to just rely on the disability pay.  Its super frustrating and if they do deny me, we'll be fighting it.

  • Pretty much what everyone else has said, FMLA only makes it so that your company has to hold your position for you for a set amount of time. Many companies will have you use your PTO if you want to be paid during that time. Or you can take the leave time unpaid.

They can deny you because you were pregnant prior to signing up. Just because a dr didn't confirm it, you were still pregnant.

  • When I looked into everything at my company, they said FMLA would cover me up to 12 weeks UNPAID, meaning they would hold my job for me, but I wouldn't get a paycheck during the entire 12 weeks.  My company's policy is also that if I'm not getting paid, I have to pay for my own health insurance (over $2000 for the month), so I have to use up my vacation and sick time so that I'll get paid and not have to pay for insurance.  For that reason, I am only taking 8 weeks off and then 2 half weeks, because I have 9 weeks saved up to use for maternity leave.

When I spoke with a few insurance companies about STD, they told me that they wouldn't cover pregnancy if it's a pre-existing condition, meaning if you conceived before you purchased the plan, you couldn't sign up for STD.  Once the doctor confirms you're pregnant, you're already at least 4 weeks along so the insurance company would probably go back to your date of conception.  I would be shocked if they would still accept you for that reason, but it can't hurt to try.  I also don't know what policies you looked at, but the one I looked into had a 30 day wait period, meaning I had to be out of work for 30 days until STD would start giving me a percentage of my paycheck, and then they would only pay me until I could medically go back to work (6 weeks for a vaginal birth, 8 weeks for a c-section).  I chose not to do it because I was only going to get paid for 2-4 weeks total from STD and chose to just bank the money that would have been taken out of my paycheck instead.  We do have a sick leave bank I could draw from if God forbid I get put on bed rest, so I have a back up plan if something goes wrong medically.

  • This is all exactly what i thought. My friend is a teacher so maybe it's different for her? Or maybe she didn't fully understand how she was getting paid lol.

My HR told me to try anyway. It may have just been the guy trying to help me feel better about not knowing I should have signed up last year. Not much I can do about it now.

We don't get any paid time off. I'm strictly commission based. We'lll see how it goes. I have the potential to earn a lot during that time but I've just opened up a new community and it's sllllloooooowwwwwwww. Hopefully I'll have some sales to help carry me over.

Sarah- since they aren't paying me a "draw" during my leave they also cannot pay my insurance. But HR told me they will send me coupons to help cover what they normally would...better than nothing.

  • So you won't have insurance when you give birth?  That's so scary :( I hope everything goes smoothly with everything!  I was researching costs before getting preg and sometimes it can cost up to $30,000 for a vaginal birth.

I had no idea that insurance companies gave away coupons.

  • Why won't they pay your draw during your leave? I'm 100% commission and while my companies maternity leave is fully paid, I do think you should be able to receive your draw still, since in reality that amount is deducted from your commission. Your future commission checks should be less that draw.

Not the insurance company. The company I work for will send me coupons that help cover the premium while I'm out.

Lynette - that's a good question. Just company policy I guess. Maybe they figure that if I don't come back to work they don't want to have paid me that money? No idea what they're reasoning is.

Sarah - I will still have insurance but ill be paying the full premium. Minus what my company sends me in coupons covering part of what they would pay. DH is already planning on working lots of overtime to help cover it. Thank god it works this way because you're right, it would be freakin expensive otherwise.
