Conceiving after BCP ?

Ok so I'm a little confused. I've been on BCPs for almost 6 yrs now. DH and I are now married but not quite ready to start trying for a baby yet. Even so I have considered (and have talked to him about) going off the Pill and using other methods. My concern is, is it too soon?

See I looked up conceiving after BC but the Nest and the Bump seemed to come up w/ 2 different answers as to how long it takes for cycles and ovulation to return to normal after going off BCPs. One says it could take up to a yr, the other says a few weeks. I tried WebMD.com but didn't come up w/ much. I just want to be off BC long enough to the point where when DH and I ARE ready for a baby, it won't be such a struggle when we're TTC. Any thoughts?

Re: Conceiving after BCP ?

  • from what I have heard, BC is one of the easiest to stop and within a few months be 'fertile' again. I wouldn't stop taking it if its worked for you so far until you are actually ready to have a baby, it can take a long time to find which method works the best, and theres lots of room for 'unexpected suprises', when you are switching from one form to another as it takes time for your body to adjust, also you might find a method you think is your best bet, and then realize it doesnt work for you...what then? Also most methods of BC (pills or other forms), are going to take SOME time for your body to adjust to quitting, so other then natural planning (which I wouldnt trust), most will take a few weeks or longer to get back to 'normal'.  If BC is working for you now I wouldn't touch it personally.
  • You find varying answers because each woman's body is different.  While it takes some women's bodies a year to adjust, others have their highest period of fertility as they come off the pill.  Talk to your doctor.

This.  It varies greatly from person to person.  Use the method that's been working for you and talk to your doctor when you're ready to come off and start TTC.

  • Thanks everyone! I wasn't really thinking of going off BCPs til maybe next year, but maybe I'll even wait longer. Definitely will talk to DH and doctor. I guess my fear is just that I've been on them for so long, but if there was an unsafe amount of time gyno or regular doctor would have said so when I got on them. You'd think, right? :)
  • I've been on the pill for over 8 years now and the worst thing that happened to me is that my testosterone got really low at one point and I started having hot flashes.  They gave me a shot of testosterone and I was fine.  Smile

  • Congrats on getting married! My husband and I just got married as well and decided to try and get pregnant from here on out. I was on BC fod 4 and 1/2 years. My Dr told me to go off of them 2 months prior to wanting to concive. My cycle went back to normal very quickly. Good luck with whatever it is you decide =)
  • Thanks for your insights heather and sessions! If you don't mind my asking, which ones were you on? I started with Yaz and switched to Gianvi.
  • I was on Yasmin, then Yaz, then back to Yasmin, then that went generic to Ocella, then that went generic to Zarah, then I went to BeYaz (it's just Yaz with folic acid in it), and now I'm on the generic of Seasonale.

  • Yep, like PP said everyone's body is different - some people will go back to "normal" right away and some won't.  I wouldn't stop taking it until you are 100% ready to have a baby.

  • When we were ready to start TTC #2, I had been on BCP's for 8 solid years. My OB-GYN said to wait to stop BCP's until we were ready to TTC because for a lot of women that was a "very fertile window of opportunity", right after stopping BCP's, so I stopped them and got pg that cycle!  The pill is out of your system within 48 hrs which is why if you miss 2 pills you are supposed to used a back-up BC method.   I did the same thing- waiting to stop BCP's until the cycle we were ready to TTC, with our 3rd and 4th children and the longest it took me to get pg was 2 cycles!  I swear by not stopping BCP's until right before you are ready to TTC!  GL to you!

  • Hi, I'm new, but I just wanted to tell you that my best friend who was also on BCP for 7 years went off for 3 weeks and became pregnant. So I think it depends on the persons body
