Hawaii- Cruise or timeshare?

My husband and I are talking about taking a trip to Hawaii in early part of 2013. We do have a timeshare that we can trade for a week in Hawaii. We also both love cruising. We are torn on weather we should do a cruise through the Hawaiian islands or actually stay on one of the islands.

I have been to Hawaii twice and my husband never has been.

Any cruise recommendations? Is February/March a nice time to go to Hawaii?

Re: Hawaii- Cruise or timeshare?

  • Read some reviews of the Hawaii cruises. They're not like most cruises because they have to be flagged in the US and have higher operating expenses due to labor costs, and that seems to affect the overall quality.

The weather can be rainier in Hawaii in February and March compared to other months, but it should still be plenty warm and the whales are around (although they might be starting to head north the later you get in March). Also try to avoid Presidents Day/Valentine's Day in February -- it gets crowded and prices go up.

  • Dont do a cruise. I grew up in Maui and the cruise ships don't dock anywhere near the nice beaches/tourist areas. They dock right off an area of town with grocery stores and shops (not touristy shops - like drugstores and fast food). The cruises are kind of a joke in Hawaii and everyone thinks they are a ripoff for what people pay. Maui is the most beautiful island and you are pretty much docked in the worst area for tourists.

Trade your timeshare and go stay and enjoy the beaches and the island. I'd go to Maui- I think it's the best for vacation and try to get a timeshare in kihei/wailea or lahaina/Kaanapali. There are lots in Ma'alaea but it's pretty isolated from good shops and beaches so I'd avoid it.

  • Just to add- Febuary and march are nice times. March is better because less chance of rain but usually the weather is pretty nice all year with some rainy days in the winter.

  • I've been to Hawaii twice now--once to Maui for our honeymoon (which was in January--and it was really pleasant and nice) and the second time on a cruise. I'm not sure what's normal for the cruiselines, but when we went, the ship couldn't actually dock (too big). So they tender passengers (use the life boats while the ship sits at anchor) and it let us off right at Front St -- and by all accounts, that seemed like a pretty touristy area to me. But again, I don't know what's normal and if that's just because we were on a cruise that left from LA, or if Princess (or any of the other lines) just have different docking arrangements then the lines that just cruise around the islands.

That said, the cruise was a really nice, relaxing and fairly easy vacation. We live in LA and the cruise left from here. So there was no flying involved, and we got to see places we didn't get to see the first time (just by virtue of the fact that we saw other islands). It was 10 sea days..and that can be a lot .. but I liked it.

    Hope this helps...

Yes front street is great. Most cruises docked in Kahului in an industrial part of town off of Kahului harbor. My dad is a government employee and would always have to inspect the ships to make sure nothing was coming in that shouldn't be and he was always down at the harbor which is NOT a nice swimming area at all.

However, front street is great and not the best beaches but nice shops so if you can dock off their that's a plus. However, I still don't think a cruise is the right way to enjoy the islands. There is so much to do on each island that I would just stay in one place and enjoy the beautiful beaches, amazing hikes, and great restaurants. Who wants to eat cruise food when you have so many awesome restaurants in Hawaii and a better atmosphere!
